I hate it when sessions get side tracked. I went in today and I needed to talk about money, and so I started with that. But I had a second topic I wanted to talk about. But from money we went to support from my family (or lack there of). It was a productive session, but didn't end up being what I had planned on talking about. I wish I had been able to continue our talk from the previous week, but it didn't happen.

Frustrating! I hate when that happens, and then having to sit with the un-touched topic until the next session. It is even worse when that topic suddenly seems irrelevant or takes another back seat to something more pressing.
Would you feel better if you left a message for your T? - or email her?
Or even just to journal about it and get it out of your mind?
When is your next T session?
I hope it is soon.
Thanks for this!

I don't know when my next session is because of financial issues. Probably not until at least near the end of December.

I hate when things get sidetracked. ktgirl has a great idea in journaling. I journal and take my notes with me. The doc often has that look upon his face like, “Oh great, he’s brought his notes…sh**!” But it is worth it and helps. When I really want to torque him I bring diagrams.

Sometimes I start off with a point in my notes and let him guide the session from there. I don’t share all of my notes but bringing them may be a help when there are large gaps between sessions this way you can bring up things that you would want to discuss but otherwise may have forgotten once the session finally comes round.

I wish you the best.
Thanks for this!

Totally hate getting side tracked. I had one of those sessions. My inner child was holding a lot of "dark stuff". I wanted to unload it, but then when I got to therapy I totally ignored her and talked about happy stuff. I had a major meltdown after the session. Actually contacted my T and we did a do-over the next day. The do-over session helped...but the inner child was not really interested in communicating her stuff after I ignored her. Side tracked sessions really suck because sometimes there is only a small window where the internal and external conditions are right to really share what is inside.
Thanks for this!

The side-track issue happens internally for us when we do not want to face what we know we need to face. It is a method of avoidance. And yes, it can cause healing to take a longer time. Thankfully, my T is wonderful and allows me to send emails. Even though he only responds when he feels it is most needed, the ability to send him that email was a life-saver for me in the trauma stage of therapy this year.
