NewT and I are starting 90 minute session next week because we keep having to stop conversations at important places because I'm out of time. I've been in therapy a long time but this is something I've never done. What are the pros and cons? What is good and bad? I'm feeling nervous about this spontaneous change so any information would be useful..

90 min is wonderful. Technically I'm scheduled for hour-long sessions but we always go 20 to 30 min over and it is much better than getting cut off at an hour. I'd imagine sometimes you'd struggle to fill the time, on a less talkative day, but if you've been stopping conversations in important places I bet you're going to like 90-min sessions.

I recently switched from 50 minute sessions every 2 weeks to 90 minute sessions. They are so much better! As jexa said, they're wonderful! When I went weekly, 50 minutes was OK, but just didn't work well for me if I went 2-3 weeks between sessions. I've only had 3 of the longer sessions, but so far, there has been no down side, except perhaps it is a little harder for T to find space in his schedule for them, because of their odd length. I do feel a little bit more pressure to have stuff to talk about, but so far, not having enough hasn't been an issue. I think "harder" issues are more apt to come out because there is not the same time pressure ("Oh, I shouldn't bring that up because we only have 15 minutes left"). Some surprising things have come up, and we were able to deal with them thoroughly because of the longer time. 90 minute sessions are more satisfying.

Well, I do technically two hour sessions (minus start/end times, so probably 110 minutes to 115 minutes), once every two weeks.

I'm doing that because the commute is about an hour and this is a lot easier to do than coming every week.

I find them useful and I can quite happily blather for that long. I only look at my watch once or twice to see where I'm at.

I've only had one 90-minute session, and that was when we did EMDR. I liked the length, but it was necessary to have that long of a session because of the EMDR process.

I take awhile to process my sessions, so regular 90-minute sessions wouldn't be the best fit for me. T and I have found that me coming twice a week is better for me. But if you're getting frustrated by not getting everything out in one 50-minute session, I can see how a 90-minute session will be very useful to you. I hope the change helps! It's great that your T is willing to change it up to help you.

Don't I wish that we could do 90 minute sessions!!

Although I find them scary beforehand, the actual experience has been good. I only get there about once a month, it's so frustrating to keep running out of time.

With 90 minutes we seem to be able to go deeper.

I would love 90 minute sessions! My therapist wouldn't go for that though. I once had a T who would give me 90 minute sessions and I thought it worked best. I tend to like to chit-chat about the daily struggle stuff first and by the time i get to the real work I run out of time. I think all of it is important so it was nice to have the longer sessions.
