I really feel like I need somebody to talk to... I have family problems, adhd, and I am still having thoughts of hurting myself, which I used to do. I am almost 17 years old and I really want help but honestly, I don't know how to tell my parents, because I don't want a big episode with them, and I don't want to admit to the only people in my life who care so much about me that I am having problems emotionally, or that I still want to hurt myself. Also, I don't want to bother them with the monetary issues, because from what I hear therapy isn't cheap. What can I do?

I'm guessing you're in school?
If so, there's likely a counselor or social worker that you have access to through your school. It might be something to explore. Does that seem like an option to you? -Far |

There really isn't... I go to a small school, and there really isn't much of a need in smaller schools. Idk.

A school counseler could be a great option, wouldn't cost your parents anything and they might not even have to know you were seeing them.
Admitting to them isn't as important as admitting things to yourself, sounds like you have already done that. |

I would recommend getting further info from a school counselor. Talk to them about what is happening, what you are feeling and such. Maybe they can direct you were to go or even help break the ice with your family. The biggest part of my stress in my life was in trying to keep the secret and carrying the burden alone. It can be a clumsy and awkward process but getting family support was a big help for me and many others like us. I wish you all the best.

If you are still in school then you can talk to the school counselor. They can help you talk through some of the stuff that's on your mind. I believe that you can set up appointments with them on a regular basis. (I'm not positive on this. I do remember talking to a counselor for a short time in HS)
Are you taking medication for ADHD? If you are, then the next time you go to the doctor for your meds you can ask if talk therapy would be helpful. Kinda letting the doctor be the one to suggest it. With you being 17 you probably are still under your parents medical insurance. Therapy could be covered. Even if you are left with a co-pay it won't be too bad. I'm not sure how you can check into that without your parents knowing. |
