I just hate canceling/rescheduling appointments with T. I feel so much fear and guilt. I had to reschedule session with T tomorrow b/c i am going on a first date with a guy who was SO afraid to ask me out. When he called me he started stuttering and sounded as if he wanted to cry. He won these tickets for an event happening Tuesday night only and i just couldn't shoot the guy down. I didn't tell T why i was resheduling, but I'm sure she would approve. We are working on me dating since i don't date EVER. This just doesn't seem like a legitimate reason and i feel so bad. Is this a legitimate reason? Has anyone ever experienced this?

That's a great reason to skip therapy. Your t will be happy that you are getting out. Enjoy yourself!

Aww! That is so sweet. I think T will be happy to hear you are going out!! Btw, people cancel T appts all the TIME. Those of us here on the psychotherapy forum are a self-selecting bunch in that therapy is a SUPER BIG DEAL to us. Obviously, since we want to talk about it so much! Most people who come to the clinic where I work don't think twice about rescheduling and T's don't get bothered by it (though no-shows definitely suck, and those happen far too often). I think T knows you are committed to therapy. Don't worry!

Thanks all! I feel so much better knowing that this is an OK reason) I'm finally getting to conquer the issues that i am working on in therapy and it feels good. I sent T a few emails but haven't disclosed my reasons. I figure it might be best said in person

I agree with the others - this is an acceptable reason to reschedule.

I can relate to the guilt though.
I feel terrible when I have to reschedule - when I have have to do it I apologize profusely - to the point where it is probably quite annoying to her.
She has reassured me that she understands and it is not a big deal.

This.

For some reason this reminded me of the Sex and City episode where Carrie gets a therapist and talks to Miranda how she is afraid she will soon begin all her sentences with "My therapist says..." to which Miranda replied: "My therapist says it's a common fear."

Your therapists should not be a center point in your life. It's someone to help you and give advise, but when real life comes in, real life should be the priority. Enjoy your date. Maybe it will end up as something wonderful. You don't wanna miss real life.
