Preferably one with a sliding fee scale? I haven't had to deal with this before, we've always been able to afford it without help (except insurance) but through my husband's newest employer the insurance apparently doesn't cover behavioral health services?? Issues we've run into when I was first diagnosed included "income in excess of available services" - they only took into account bills of living, not the amount I was spending on meds, psychiatry, etc which added up to an astronomical hit but nope, that wasn't considered.

At this time I'm on disability but only have Medicare part A, hospital coverage... my husband encouraged me to cut the cost as much as possible so foolishly we discontinued Part B and Part D coverages, now I kind of wish I had at least part B available even though I know it's difficult to find therapists who accept Medicare anyway!

I know I need a T, and that we could probably benefit greatly from couples therapy as well but financially it's next to impossible right now.

Also we lived in Washington State before where COL is much lower than here in California so even though our income is technically higher maybe I'd still qualify somehow? But I don't even know where or how to start looking.

Search Google for: City [put in yours] psychotherapy sliding-fee

Or, here's some professional referral lines:

National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
Counseling and Psychotherapy Referral Service (213) 852-4769

Southern California Psychiatric Society
(Have referrals for Psychiatrists who take Medi-Cal) (310) 815-3650

Or check your own phone book and call local people and ask for what you need.

University graduate programs often have clinics where trainees see folks for a low fee. It's not for everyone, but a good option for some.

Good luck,

In doing some digging, I found on our insurance website that the therapist who shares a practice/office space with my psychiatrist actually IS accepting new patients and actually DOES take our insurance (I thought she was out of network) and actually works closely with my P on patients they have in common, AND her "special areas of interest" include among other things every one of the concerns I'm currently facing INCLUDING family/couples therapy. I'm praising my God for the gift! Since I have an appointment today I will be talking to my P about this lady and see if P thinks she'll be a good fit; if so I fully plan to make an appointment before I leave, oh yeah.
