I first started in therapy when I was 14 or 15. I'm now 65. I've just gone back into therapy for the first time in 25 years. During ALL that time, around fifty years, my "unconscious" mind (or whatever you want to call it) has been fighting tooth and nail against any kind of insight or progress whatever. Never can remember dreams; am barricaded against any kind of insight. Well, things have changed. For the first time in my life, yesterday morning I had three (3) explicit dreams that I could not only remember, but remember long enough to turn on the computer and write notes on them for my T session today. And what dreams!!! About as explicit as a Daily News headline!!! I understood them as soon as I woke up!!! Not only cooperating with me on matters I'd already discussed with my T, but ALSO telling me about OTHER problems I have that my "unconscious" INSISTS I deal with NOW!!! I was laughing all Thursday morning. AT LAST we're working together as a team! Lord, you just don't know what that feels like after FIFTY YEARS!!! COUNT 'EM!!!! And take care, all of you.

No, rainbow8, we're never too old to grow. I think it really has to do with the pressure we're under. (Understand, now, that this is just my opinion.) I have sufficient positive qualities (intelligence, work ethic, etc.) that even with my motor hitting on only one cylinder for fifty years, I have been able to "get by" without feeling really trashed. And things within the past two or three years have been REALLY bad. So, finally, my unconscious has given up. Even my unconscious realizes now that we're in a very tight spot indeed. So, therefore, the dreams, which I hope very much will continue for at least the near future! Take care!

I loved my therapy dreams and working with them, it was actually "fun". I'm glad you are noticing breakthroughs after 25 years away. I went away for only 9 and saw enormous growth in myself (and my therapist) that took place while I was away; I was amazed.

Great example of all that 'squishy, non-quantifiable stuff' therapists say: you know- "trust the process, when you are ready you will know" etc... Ygrec, your story helped me to remind me that we are working and healing even when we think we are not (maybe this can be a more powerful way of getting at the issues?)
Thanks for sharing!
