I have been in therapy five years now with anorexia so i do have some insight into psychotherapy. However i am being refered to a personality disorder mental health team where i am starting a new therapy revolving around my past abuse issues.

My question is how do you know if you are ready to commit to psychotherapy when it involves discussing some very personal issues. I am a closed person and have never sort treatment for these issues. However i have started to deteriate in my mental health which my cpn, consultants and ed therapist beleive is due to my unresolved abuse issues. I want to sort this but am scared.

Thank you.

Hi Alittlelost, and welcome!

I'm not sure I know the answer to your question, but I do think that it is hard to know for sure if you are ready. Do you have to 'commit' to anything right now? Maybe you can just take it one session at a time and see how it unfolds. In most therapy situations that I've read about here, and in my own therapy, the client gets to set the pace, which means you won't have to talk about the very personal stuff until you've had a chance to build some trust with the T.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Alittlelost, if the therapist does their job well... Then they won't push you too far too fast. The therapist will work on helping you trust them before they expect you to open up with the hard stuff. Just one step at a time at your own pace will help you realize if you are ready or not.
