I went in upset this morning because I saw my abuser yesterday. I was able to speak but the stuttering was bad. T asked a little about what happened and then spent almost the rest of the session in small chit chat.

It did help I guess, because I grew more relaxed and my speech returned to normal. But when I got a little teary when it was almost time to leave, there were only a few minutes left to go over my main worry of running into him again.

I'd rather be upset and non-verbal and talk/write about important stuff than relaxed and fluently talking about fluff...

He's a great T, and I'm lucky to have him. I was just feeling too cruddy to speak up about what I needed today.

right...you can appreciate the time and care taken to help you feel calm in the session while still feeling irritated and disappointed that you now feel unprepared to cope if/when the situation arises again...i didnt think you were implying that he's not a good therapist
Thanks for this!

It stinks when you go in wanting to discuss something, and instead all the time is spent on something else. But in this case, you wanted to discuss a scary thing. You didn't waste time in that session; you spent it regaining your sense of safety. Next week you can discuss the scary contact and plan for managing future ones. This wasn't a lost opportunity. That time was well spent.
