There is also a dissociative disorders forum here. Most of us are DID but any dissociative disorder stuff is welcome.
Yes there are T's who specialize in it and there are T's who will not work with it. There are a ton of different kinds of therapy. Some are more useful for dissociative stuff than others. some also depends on your personality. Ultimately the research suggests that the connection between the T and the client is more important than anything else as far as achieving outcomes.

Well she told me at the end of session, after I shared with her some experiences I have had. It was not the best situation. I did not have another appointment scheduled for 16 days at that point. I also see pdoc on that next appointment. I do not know if I can call her or email or text her. She has 30+ years as a T. She is a specialist in trauma and recommended by pdoc. Appointments are very tight and have to be made at least 2 months in advance. This is true for the whole area that I live in, took me 3 months to get into pdoc and that was after 2 days of calling every pdoc in my area to see if they were accepting new patients with my insurance. She may want to refer me to someone else, but that may not be possible with my insurance and the lack of mental health care in our community. I KNOW WHAT IS SCARING ME. This is a life altering diagnosis. No empathy form other health care providers. I will be labeled and my physical care will suffer because other docs will think I am a head case. And then there is my husband. I am an RN. I have seen how the medical docs respond to people with psych histories. I WANT TO adopt a child and I can see children services reacting negatively to this diagnosis. This all started with the adoption classes. And I do not want to be referred on to another T because it was so difficult for me to even start seeing T. I have 11 days to wait to see T and only 50 minutes to ask and share all my questions and concerns. And no appointments are available, I called twice. SO I am so glad to be able to vent and share on this website. THANK-YOU SO MUCH

Yes the medical community is awful about psych labels.
I successfully adopted a child having been open about my all my challenges and being a single mom. We were put together on a "trial basis" a little longer than most families before I could finalize the adoption but I was able to adopt. We actually got more support to make things work because of my openness. I wanted older kids (6+), not a baby, but I was never turned down the opportunity to be considered for a child and got both children I wanted as part of my family. One child decided he did not want to be a part of a family and left but child services never discriminated against me. I don't know where you are located but I know adoption in the US pretty well and would be glad to help if something did come up.

I did a radio show a few months ago about not being afraid to be diagnosed with DID/ DID-nos.... please, if this is what you're facing, try not to fear it. Its only as big a deal as you make it. I mean, you don't HAVE to be afraid of it. It doesn't have to be a bad thing. There are LOTS of people with dissociative disorders-- it is not as rare as the public is led to believe-- it doesn't have to be scary or shameful--and there are therapists out there who can help--and there are also a few good inpatient places out there to get help at should you decide to go that route. Things will be ok.
