I started seeing a psychologist recently and was curious as to how long it usually takes for a diagnosis? I have had many issues in my life and would like to know exactly what I am dealing with.
Thank You in advance for any response to my question.

Not all psychologists will give a diagnosis. Some of them feel that it constricts their treatment by narrowing down the issues so tidily. Of course, if you have insurance, I think they have to do that.

Why don't you ask?

One of my never has; as Sky said some don't, some are required to, depends on the system you are in and the individual psychologist .... the only way to really find out is by asking. I hope yours is able to help you with this

Thanks for the your responses, I will ask and I hope he is willing to give a diagnosis. I feel like my physician may not be getting my meds right. It is hard when you have to go to one person for meds and another for therapy.

Are you seeing a psychiatrist or a general practitioner for meds? If it is the latter, then a diagnosis from a mental health provider may help to get your meds appropriate for you symptoms.

A psychiatrist likely has come to a conclusion already.

All in all, I would try not to become hung up on a diagnosis. There is so much overlap among presentation, I think most docs target meds based on symptom relief rather than protocol. There are exceptions of course, but in general that's my opinion.

You could ask to take the MMPI test. There are a lot of questions on it and it is very repetitive. It is helpful for making a diagnosis.

I have not been given a diagnosis by my therapist and it has been several years. We have accomplished a ton in therapy without my having one. If you need a diagnosis, you will probably have to ask your psychologist. I think your prescribing doc has probably formed his/her own conclusion. You could also ask this doc what indication he/she is prescribing for.

I wouldn't assume your diagnosis is what your providers tell insurance. They often just put that down for reimbursement purposes. For example, I see a PNP for ADHD, but she puts down "major depression, recurrent" on the insurance form. I am not depressed, though. This is just to allow her to get reimbursed for services. (Insurance doesn't like to reimburse for ADHD.)

In order for a therapist and doc to get paid they have to put some kind of diagnosis on paper. Ask your doc or therapist about this. It does take time to get a "right" diagnosis.

Only true if you're having insurance cover your bills. If you're paying out of pocket, then they don't have to come up with a diagnosis. I'm sure most therapists do have a diagnosis in their minds, and maybe even in their notes, but often won't tell a client unless asked.

Personally....I don't wanna know! I prefer not to be labeled by a diagnosis.

When I finally started seeing a psychiatrist it took maybe a year. Initial diagnoses included unipolar depression, psychotic depression, bipolar two, and finally schizoaffective disorder. When they started prescribing for sza I started to get better.

My T diagnosed my PTSD but my pdoc diagnosed my bipolar disorder. It took pdoc about a month to diagnose me, but she started out treating me for it as my symptoms pointed there.

I was not told my diagnosis when I was younger. Now I feel as if everyone lied to me when I was in my twenties even if it was for my benefit. Now I am in my forties and have to relearn stuff because I was not aware of my diagnosis at the time. ASK.

I was diagnosed with PTSD after just one session with my T. And my psychiatrist affirmed it.
