I went in this afternoon and told T, "I have something for you, don't let me forget to give it to you."
But she didn't have to remind me, I remembered. Almost at very end of session I reached into my pocket and held out my closed hand. Here, I have something for you. She reached hers out, palm up, with that "oh no you didn't buy me something did you " look

and into it I dropped a tiny acorn.

I said, 'great oaks from little acorns grow', T; and some time this month we will pass the 4 year mark in our work together. There are two great old oaks standing right outside the front door of this place; I recommend you stop by them, take a good look at them, listen to the wind in their leaves... you have tended many little acorns, in your years in this work, who are now great oaks, and if they are, it's because of you. I myself am not one yet, to be sure, but I have hopes.

There!! one less thing I have to post under "things you really want to tell your T, but can't".... And i am so glad I did. I could tell she heard me.

Thanks for this!

what an amazing moment with your therapist.

I think she was sort of startled, and then in typical T fashion she deflected it from herself... she told me what I was like when we first started, and what a long long way she sees that I have come. I reminded her that she once told me, "the ability to tolerate anxiety is healing," and said how on that day I wanted to smack her (she said, like "wap-wap-wappity-wap" and I said "exactly", and we laughed. And I told her that today, even though I surely still have anxiety, I understand what she said. At end of session she looked at the acorn and said, I really like this, I'm going to keep it.
