I was wondering if anyone has ever given T something for Christmas? I am wrestling with the thought that I would LIKE to give her something, but will she reject it because maybe she can't accept gifts.
I don't know the laws/rules around it.

Anyone know? I need to put my mind to rest on this one because it's driving me crazy!

Thanks

onlymedid, I ordered a small thing for my T. It's a little horse figurine with a little boy boosting a little girl up onto the horse. It's kind of how I think of he and I -- he's giving me a leg up.
Thanks for this!

I gave T a Christmas gift a few years ago (I don't do it every year.) I knew he wouldn't have a problem with it because he has gifts from other clients around his office and he talks about those gifts. It was a very nice figurine that was symbolic of our relationship.
Thanks for this!

I usually don't but this year I did, don't know what got into me LOL. I got her an action figure of Sigmund Freud, holding his cigar. She thought it was really funny. I told her it was either this or "Dashboard Jesus" and she laughed and said "no no no, I'll take Freud!" Then she told me she still has a little sculpture I gave her 8 years ago, sitting on her bookcase at home. I was kind of touched when she told me that. I was in college and I made it in a ceramics class...it was a series of cats sitting on suitcases. (which my cat likes to do).
Thanks for this!

i've never given my t's a gift for christmas before. i'm thinking of doing that this year though (after 8 years of therapy im beginning to see her as quite a blessing).one of my t's has lots of gifts from patients the other has none on display or in her office but i know from another patient of hers that she does accept gifts. actually, im gonna give her something for haanaka (however one spells that), she might be insulted if i gave it to her for christmas since she's jewish. i have no idea what to get her...but i like the symbolism of our relationship idea.......kasva

I would find that awkward, I think.

I would never give my T anything she could wear or keep in her offcie - in case she didn't.

I may or may not give a gift. She accepts them, but I think it feels awkward. I'm still deciding. I found this article from Psychology Today that is helpful and humorous too

Actually, it's really neat. He keeps a pretty homey office. Lots of family pictures, vacation photos, etc. The gifts range from little McDonald's Happy Meal toys from his child clients to handmade gifts to figurine's like mine. Some are silly; some are gorgeous; some are clearly symbolic. I can't remember how we got on the topic of the gifts one day. Oh, yes I do! I was dissociating and one of his methods of grounding me is to have me focus on concrete objects in his office and name them and describe them. I looked at one of the gifts and said, "What the heck is that?" He proceeded to explain the significance of that certain object and we ended up talking about several different gifts around the room. (Worked like wonders to bring me back to earth by the way.) He keeps everything. In fact, he moved to a new building a couple of months ago and even those Happy Meal toys made the trip.
Thanks for this!

Actually, your spelling is very phonetic. It gets spelled various ways, though, including:

Chanukah
Hannukah

These are the most common spellings, with the Ch being somewhat more traditional than the H.

Anne

P.S. wrap your present with Chanukah wrapping paper and she'll be all impressed.
