I was so afraid of emdr that we never started. I got as far as creating a container. T said I was allowed to say stop at any point. Then she said I was not ready for emdr. The inner child stuff really helped me.

I was afraid of EMDR and to some extent I still am, but it seems to help me. I've done it maybe about 10 times in the 2 years I've been with my T. She is getting advanced certification in it so she really believes in it and does it with most of her clients. If I were you, I'd give it a try. It's not invasive; it's just a little strange getting used to, and some people can't do it. I feel relaxed afterwards rather than stirred up, but I'm not doing it for major trauma or abuse. My T uses it for anything that triggers me or anything I'm stuck on.

I don't do inner child work but my T does Internal FamilySystems therapy which is basically the same, I think, except that the inner parts are not always children! I was also skeptical of this, very much so, but I like it very much now. My T tells me to accept all my parts and often we deal with a child part who wants to be held. She has me visualize my adult Self holding my child part, along with her, my T, and sometimes others. The goal is for me to be able to comfort that part. I never used to be able to do it at all, but I can now, somewhat.

I suggest going slowly these techniques, especially with EMDR, but give them a try. How experienced is your T with EMDR?

I'm not sure but I don't think EMDR has been around that many years! But if he's doing therapy that long, he probably is very experienced so I would try his methods.
