I like having a male T because they can provide insights from the male perspective. Having said that, I still don't know what men want!

I mean, aren't these people sworn to confidentiality, EXCEPT in the face of evidence that a client is committing a crime? Sexual abuse of a child would fall into that category. What if you asked the T if they'd reported the guy - and the T woudn't tell you?

I'd be worried, and wondering if the guy should be reported. The fact that someone is a confessed pedophile doesn't mean they're currently abusing any kids. But you don't know the situation, and the T wouldn't tell you.

You know, it just gets you all caught up in something that shouldn't be your problem, and it changes the focus of therapy - which should never stray to concerns about the T's other clients.
I didn't and don't consider it murky or a problem for me. Sally has a pretty accurate picture of the situation. My T and I had previously discussed that we had both worked in prisons with inmates and the difficulty of finding a . . . connection? way to establish a rapport? . . . with people like that. So, I already knew that he had treated criminals, including pedophiles, and that he knows the rules for dealing with criminals.

He was more reminding me that he had, and that he currently does, treat pedophiles and nothing I can say is all that bad in comparison. By the time he told me that, I had already been in treatment with him for a year and a half, and really struggling to get to the point where I could finally say out loud what I needed to. He was trying to help me get it out there by promising not to judge me and using this other client who I will never meet and who I will not speculate about beyond what my T has shared, to point out that (1) T has heard worse, and (2) T still saw this pedophile as a person and viewed what he had done in light of the horrors this guy experienced himself as a child.
Thanks for this!

Thanks everyone for your input!! I really do think that fact that T is a male is going to be a good thing for me.. Only having 2 months of thearpy, I am just thinking I of course need to give it time. I don't suspect that sex is something that will be talked about a whole lot, but I do think the topic and past history will be brought up that will have some senstive topics involved that I usually don't talk to males about. It all takes time, right?
