Do others find they have to avoid certain aspects of life?
sometimes thoughts are best left as just that ![]() Last edited by Anonymous32795; Mar 18, 2012 at 10:10 AM. |

I don't know why your discomfort plays out in politics? How are you volunteering on social issues? I think it is "you" and not your friends. They probably do not feel discomfort about the same things or in the same way you do (or they would be like you and avoid politics rather than embrace it?).
I have little or no interest in politics unless it very directly affects me (usually relative to some social issue). I think our interests are genetic and experience-based; you have parents (or friends :-) who are into politics, you learn about politics and are into politics, etc. Or, perhaps you rebel against someone being into politics and decide you aren't into politics. I had no experience with therapy and my parents were "against" it such that I never told them I was in therapy. But, I'm genetically wordy :-) and introspective and my family's psychological "problems" can be seen to go back two or three generations?

No I haven't made myself clear. I am not against my friends, I am feeling guilt that I am not more like them. My avoidence creates guilt.

I used to think some about why I was not more political or into good works and so forth in other areas. But then I realized I found most of those who were heavily involved in good causes and political movements etc to be annoying people who I did not want to spend time with. Humorless, way too concerned with political correctness, strident, and without a sense of irony. It is fine with me if that is what others want to do, but it is not for me in the group way. If it is avoidance, I can live with it.

That does not make a lot of sense to me; everyone has their own interests? We can't be everything; politically active, socially active, economically well off, taking care of our selves, home, and family; going to school, working 50 hours a week, pursuing our own interests, keeping up with the Jones and being like our friends?

Some people avoid sex their whole lives. I think that's very sad.
And others avoid intimacy. That's sad too. Sadder, even.

I realise I've been avoiding a whole lot of things. Seems easier at the time, but then you find your world getting smaller and smaller, and that you're missing out on a bunch of stuff. Some things are best left avoided though. Umm... avoid in moderation?!

Okay, third time trying to understand is the charm!
![]() You are not "active" like your friends? They do stuff but trying to do stuff just makes you more confused whereas therapy and talking about stuff is helpful?
