I think it might be especially helpful with negative transference issues. During those times, we can "hear" our T say things they really aren't saying, but because we've been triggered, we are convinced they did. Or, in the alternative, since T's usually have a lot of clients, sometimes they will say something that highly impacts us negatively. and when we bring it up a week or so later, they can't imagine that they would have said such a thing. If the session has been recorded, it can be settled.
I was in a toxic therapeutic relationship for about four years the ended about three years ago. I'd give anything if we'd had recordings of our sessions.

I have been recording sessions with my T for about 6 months now. I have a recorder and have quite a few sessions stored on it. I listen to each session a number or times during the week. Like some others have said, I too find the sound of my T's voice comoforting.....My own voice, not so much.
I sometimes listen to older sessions and hear things I had forgotten about. I must be ready to hear them again, because what she had said seems to make more sense a second time around. I also have dissociative disorder, so there are things I just don't hear during the session, but when I listen to the recording later on while relaxing at home, I am then able to hear everything she is saying. I think recording my sessions has been 99% positive for me.. The few things I did not hear in session but have concerns about, I just write down and bring it up during our next session.... ![]() |
