I'm so depressed I haven't stopped crying. They wouldn't even give me a reason. I called T. (which I NEVER do but he's in jury duty) I'm so defeated, betrayed, hurt, and upset.

I hate my life.

((((( HUGS )))))

I'm SO sorry you're going through this pain. I can relate so much to it. I was let go of my job of nearly 15 years, the very day I came back to work after being on short term disability for the first and only time of my life.

It is painful...and so disruptive to our lives....But please hang onto the hope that something better will come from this. For now, though, it's ok to feel sad, angry, hurt....

There reason was:

"my employment with xyz is at will, and I am free to resign at any time, and that the company Xyz is similarly free to terminate my employment, for any reason, with or without cause."

T told me to email me what happened and he would sneak out his phone and email me back, which he did. This was his email:

"Thank god you are finishing EMT school and that you are ready to start something new. You did not like the job anyway. Look at the future and silver lining. I promise to be there for you and make this work."

Makes me feel a little better.

Your T has a very good point. Smart man. Sorry you are going through this. So stressful whether or not you liked the job in the first place.

Wise T. It sucks to get fired, it can make you feel rather unwanted, but that doesn't sound like a place you'd want to work at.

Which doesn't make it less painful.

But your T is right, and is there for you. As are we.
Thanks for this!

I just did something I would NEVER normally do. I asked T if he could leave me a voicemail of something that could calm me down a bit. I've never admitted to him that his voice calms me down until just now. I hope he says yes.

I'm really sorry too, but I'm glad you got such a good, wise answer from your T. The best way to look at this is as an opportunity to do something you enjoy much more!
I'm sorry it hurts right now though, and hope T leaves you a voicemail too. Those really can help and it's OK to want/need one.
Thanks for this!

It's unfortunately true that when you're an employee at will, they don't have to give you a reason for terminating your employment. However, the good news is that in most states, you're entitled to unemployment compensation if they fire you without 'good cause.' It sounds like they don't have good cause, or they would have been sure to tell you that so that you'd know you were not eligible for unemployment compensation. Hop down to your state office and get your paperwork going as soon as you can, Lost. Hang in there and take good care of yourself.
Thanks for this!

If they fire you "without cause" they can't fight giving your claim for unemployment (not that this is a great thing) but if they do try to contest your unemployment then they have to give a reason for your being fired "for cause"

I am so sorry this happened to you! But like your T said (from what I gather) there IS a silver lining! So maybe its a sign to focus on the new future! AND it is SO great that your T sent that affirming message to you!

and I agree with Mike J...!

((((lostmyway))))) So sorry to hear about your job. I am glad T is there for you and I hope you can find a new job or different arrangments soon enough. Your T is right, the timing of you finishing your EMT course is good.

I'm really sorry that this happened to you, and that you feel so bad as a result.

This may not help you at all, but I've been fired 3 times in thirty years of working. Each time, I was really ill-suited for the job and I was planning or contemplating leaving it. Each time, I found something better. I firmly believe that getting fired really meant that I was supposed to be going down a different path. And I did. For of those jobs, if I hadn't been fired I never would have met my wife.

You know that whole window shut, door open truism? It does really work. There may be all kinds of opportunities ahead because you've disconnected from this job that may have been holding you back.
Thanks for this!

I don't have too much to add to what everybody else has said, but take it easy and remember we're always here for you, just like your T!

I in no way want to minimize how horrible this must feel right now, but one day you may look back on this as the best possible thing that could have happened to you. Just be nurturing to yourself and you will get through this. Your T sounds wonderful.
