Hi Everyone,
I'm doing reasonably ok adjusting to living in the supportive living facility for the blind. It's almost my third week here, and I like most of the staff and residents.
I am having a hard time finding a new therapist. Since I moved from another state I have to totally re-apply for medicade here in IL which will take some time. Also, much of my SSI money that i used to go towards therapy and stuff is now going towards where I'm living.
I did meet with a social worker on Thursday. He was really neat. He's also blind, and in the field that I majored in in college (counseling psychology) so very inspiring. Unfortunately, he doesn't really do therapy, just helps residents find community resources. He mentioned that even the psychologists who come here to consult don't take medicade yet, just medicare. I have to see if I can get that, but don't know.
At the depression support group I went to on Wednesday night the members gave me a list of several places that have reduced fee counseling. I won't list them here publicly, but if anyone here is from the area and would be interested in knowing what they are you can pm me and I'll give you the names. I'm just curious if anyone has any experiences with these places and what quality of care they got.
Also, my psychologist friend mentioned before I moved that she wished I could see a therapist for free, that some therapists have one or two spots where they'll see a client for free. I'd never heard of this. Do any of you know anything about it?
If anyone knows where else I could post this (other forums, the q and a section for example) so I could get as many responses as possible let me know.

Thanks so much to replying to this thread. Yes, I haven't gotten any other answers. I don't know why. Maybe there aren't a lot of people from here, or for whatever reason they don't feel comfortable replying. That's why I said they could pm me but I haven't gotten any mesages either. I'm very good at looking into resources and finding things, I was more curious about people's personal experiences at some of these low cost community mental health centers, because I know sometimes quality of the care you get there can vary. I'll keep asking and looking around. Thanks so much for your support!
