Now that T has rec DBT, I'll just need to find some other source of income to help pay for DBT for next year if it extends into the new year that is. T doesn't know anything about how my insurance works and I don't bother to tell her. She has no idea how hard I work and budget my finances to see her. It hasn't been a huge barrier yet and I hope it won't be.

It is a huge eye opener to know that I have the most expensive T on this board so far (that is to those of us who've responded to this thread). I was thinking that $ 256 was average. Boy......was I wrong or what?
I think you ought to talk to her about it. It affects you - it's a stressor - and what you've gotta know is that whether you want it to or not, it can subtly affect your therapy. That's why it's good to just put it on the table. You're not complaining about it, or telling her she should do anything differently, you're just saying "hey, since we're adding DBT, I just want you to be aware of the financial stressors involved..." then tell her about your deductible, etc.

I guess the good news is that with her high fees, you've probably already satisfied the deductible. Hopefully for the rest of the year it'll all be covered. Only thing is - I don't know how your insurance is, but mine has an upper limit for fees. For example, they'll pay 80% of a maximum of $160. Anything over that I'd have to pay for myself if the provider is out-of-network.

My T is a Psychologist (Ph.D.) When I started 3.5 years ago, her fee was $185 for a 45 minute hour. It's probably gone up a bit since then.

When I switched to 2 times a week recently, she very kindly lowered her fee to $125/session.

She doesn't accept insurance, and so when I switched from once to twice per week, I decided I really need to start filing on my own. It looks like I get somewhere between 1/3 - 1/2 of her fee back, though I haven't really been filing long enough to figure it out exactly yet.

My T (PhD with 20 years of experience) charges $125 for 45 minutes. Since pretty early on we've been doing 50-55 minute sessions, which I insist paying her $5-10 more for. With my insurance, she only gets $67, which includes my $19 copay. This amount from the insurance company actually went down from last year: it allowed for $72 and my copay was $14. I feel terribly about this. INSURANCE COMPANIES SUCK! She explained to me early on, when I asked about her seeing people 45 mins and often back to back, that the reason for this is financial (though she does an amazing job of moving from one appt to another and I never feel like she's not there with me). Unbelievable that she makes so little per hour (we live in a major metro area with high rent I'm sure for her office) and that this rate is going down! I'll say it again: INSURANCE COMPANIES SUCK!
p.s. I have a $1250 deductible that includes all doctors and pharmacy bills, too...

She charges $100 per session. I have BCBS insurance and they only allow her to charge $65 per session since she is in their network. insurance covers 80% and I pay 20% which is $13 per session

That's a good point. I don't remember the exact amount, but I know from looking at my insurance website that by taking my insurance she doesn't get paid her full fee even when you add their payment plus my co-pay. I felt pretty bad once I realized that as well as extremely grateful that she would even take my insurance.

My T is an LCSW with a private practice on the side-his main job is being a director at a university counseling center and he is also a professor at different university. He charges 80-but since I was a student when I started it's only $65 for about 50-60 min. Recently I've been going through financial strain and he has said he is not worried about the fee-and will see me for free some sessions(my mom pays for 2 sessions a month) but right now we are working on tough stuff-so I think that's one of the reasons he has been seeing me for extremely reduced or free. He is trained in DBT and EFT and trauma focus.
