I think that it may often be that in challenging situations-- we have the chance to see how far we have come. When regular old life is just chugging along, it's not until we hit that pothole that we can understand how much stronger and skillful we are.

I think I used to drive a rickety jalopy that would fall into pieces like one of my son's lego creations when I hit a pothole. Now I might be driving a sturdy, solid, older model sedan that takes the bump but then smooths out again for a comfortable ride.
