It is such a daunting task finding a good T ( I don't have anyone to ask) and the ones I have found on Psychology Today have turned out to be the biggest duds.
How did you find your T? Website? Cold call? Referral from someone? Thanks |

I found my T through my insurance company, so I guess that could be considered a referral, though I didn't know anything about her before going in. But this was back in the day before Ts having websites was more the norm
![]() I went to several Ts that were listed by my insurance company before ultimately choosing my current T. A second, consult T I recently saw was recommended by a friend who had seen her 10+ years ago. |

I found the woman on the internet and called her. So I don't know if that is website or cold call.

I'd say that is the Internet, as it least gave you some context to who she was ![]() ![]() |

Found mine on Psychology Today website. I had very specific criteria in mind, though, and she was the only one that fit my criteria. I also had a phone consult with her before my first appointment. My T is awesome, and an excellent fit for me, but it really helped that I knew exactly what I wanted and needed in a T.

I guess I didn't think about the privacy piece, though I see myself as a pretty private person too. I figured that it all needs to be confidential anyway. Though it wasn't necessarily easy going in and telling my story a bunch of times. |

I found my first T at my university counseling center. When he left, he gave a short list of colleagues in private practice that he thought would work well for me. The first one on the list did not work well for me, so I moved onto the second one. I liked him from the first phone call and he's been my T ever since.

I pulled my insurance list, looked up all of their web sites, bookmarked the ones that seemed like a good possibility, looked at them all again over the course of a few days & went with the one that really stuck out in my mind for whatever reason.

My first T was recommended by my GP.
many years later, when I decided it was time to see a T again, I contacted first T who referred me to my current T. |

I found my t on the psychology today web site. I was actually researching names my pdoc had given me, when I stumbled across her profile - i noticed it because it mentions "dream work" and I didn't even know any such thing existed at the time, but that intrigued me since I have such a vivid dream life, so I called her and the rest is history

I voted "referall from someone"... but by that, I mean that I got a list from my school on good therapists. And from that list, I chose my t because she had the best review. (it was the dean's personal list with her personal comments beside each name).

Mine seemed to be assigned to me. In Canada we have Universal healthy care and only psychiatrists are covered, first time I met her she came to the hospital when I was on the psych ward.
I am very lucky as not many pdocs offer talk therapy for an hour a week. I liked her right away, she is very caring and compassionate. |

I voted referral, which is true for my current P, but the previous 35 Ts (not kidding) were all cold call and/or website. Which sort of says something about the calibre of Ts picked via yellow pages or their own websites. Lol or it says something about the intractability of my issues.
This is UK mind you and probably different from how things pan out in the States. What screwed my therapy up was not being able to gain access to those Ts with the training/experience needed to help me - hence having to work my way through dozens of cold call Ts before finally finding one who was able to give me a referral to someone who then referred me on to someone else who had the level of expertise I needed. Though it's early days yet (I've only seen this new P - clinical psychologist - about a dozen times so far) I'm impressed by her attitude and approach and think that at last I have a chance of getting help through therapy. So I suppose if anyone were looking for a new T, I'd suggest trying really hard to get a recommendation or a referral. Which is not to say that cold call or self advertising Ts or those who put themselves on a public register of Ts are all useless by any means, just that you might have to pan through a lot of dross before you hit paydirt. Insuranc company.
I had to try three before the third seemed like a good fit. I'm glad I was persistent.

Well, I choose the office threw word of mouth. Lots of people in my circle of friends knew the Ts in the office and had nothing but good things to say about them. So, I got my gp to refer me there. However, I saw a t for like 3 sessions and he left b/c of of medical issues and I just ended up with my T b/c all the rest of the ts in the office had to split up his patients. It was random, but I am glad it happeend like that.. We are a good team!

I found mine on the internet. I have been trying online chat therapy (text and video) and find it both affordable and helpful.

oh yeah i'm on my third t. the first two were referrals from primary doc and they did NOT work out in the slightest. My t right now is the best. Even when I'm mad at her like right now. Because it's going to end up helping me in the long run even though she ticks me off right now. She's the best - I can be stubborn.

My sister gave me the name of my T from a colleague of hers. So I didn't get an official referral but kind of a friend of a friend knows he's good sort of thing. My T told me he gets most of his clients through referrals from previous clients.

I went to a counseling session at a local clinic and the T there told me that she wouldn't be able to see me on a regular basis, but she recommended someone who could. Who turned out to be my amazing T.
