Had both, but prefer males over females. Females are too emotional.

I think everyone should pick what works for them, but my personal experience has been that the female therapists I pick are not emotional (at least that they show me). I tried a male one (I have tried two men) and he was the most emotional person, let alone therapist, I have ever met. It was awful. Worse than the pompous and condescending male one I left in the middle of the appointment. I knew it would not work. I have also done that while interviewing female therapists who were pompous and condescending.

Last time we did this (August 2012), there were a lot more female Ts than males.

I've had both male T's and female T's. I prefer male T's because they don't over react but I currently have female T that I've been far more honest than anyone else.

All female T's. Except one male bereavement counselor that I had when my dad passed away when I was 11. My mom switched counselors because he seemed shady or whatever. I was only eleven so I'm not quite sure exactly what she was talking about.

Female T for sure...
I can't imagine sitting across from a male T and talking about things. Scares me! ![]() |

I really can't see myself talking to female T. I guess I'd be willing to try it, but I generally relate better to men.

I'm a female and I have a male T. He's the only T I've had, but I couldn't imagine myself -especially when I started- with a female T.

Female, I could never see a male therapist.. yes that does make me a tad sexist, but there is a certain amount of "male pride" that I wouldn't be able to let go of if I had a male therapist..

I never thought I would be able to open up to a male T. When I first when for an assessment at the University Counseling Center, it was a guy that did the assessment. I told him that I would prefer a female. Upon reflecting on the assessment session, I realized that I'd been very comfortable with him and that since relationships with men have been part of my issue, I thought it might be good for me to get outside my comfort zone a little. So, I saw the original T and he was amazing.
Once he moved, I tried a female T he'd recommended and I couldn't stand her. I felt like I could railroad her. So, I saw a male T that my first T had also recommended and I've been with him since Jan 2012. I never expected to be comfortable with a male T, but for some reason, I am. There's almost nothing I can't talk to him about. |

Female for me. I could never open up or trust a male t. I identify as a lesbian and I know all males are not A-holes but I just can't deal with men. It probably goes back to my father who was a wife beater and cheater!

Female T for me...I just feel more comfortable talking to a female.
Pdoc is male though. For some odd (unknown) reason...I don't feel comfortable with females prescribing me medication. I guess I sterotype and think that males are better in the science/medicine field. |

I have found female Ts to be less open-minded and more judgmental.
![]() And I also found myself caring more about what I looked like when I went in there...like I really need to be put together because the two I have seen in the past 3 years were beautiful and quite put together. Totally supports the idea that women dress up for other women (I mean me feeling that way, not them or the way they dressed/looked)...and I am neither bi nor a lesbian (to clarify, or else my point would be lost). |

I have never seen a male T. I don't know if I could... I just prefer discussing relationship type issues with a female. Also, while it hasn't really ever come up, if I wanted to discuss sex or sexual related things, I would definitely feel more comfortable with a female.

I am surprised how many people see female Ts...just as a general observation. But then again, I guess a lot of females don't feel comfortable talking about intimate issues with males...

I have a female T and would never have a male T.
I need the emotion and understanding and caring. I think it's something I really long for because I never had it as a child

I called 73 therapists ...all male...she was the last one on the list and the only one that called me back.
The rest is history. I've only had one therapist. |
