I watch shows on Hulu and came across this new show on Bravo: LA Shrinks - Watch TV Shows Online at XFINITY TV. It includes sessions with real clients. I didn't get 10 seconds into the opening intro of the second episode and had to click away from it. The first episode wouldn't load, so I clicked on the second one.

The few seconds I saw were pretty ridiculous. Has anyone seen this and how do you feel about how they portray therapists?

I am a huge Bravo fan. Please know their shows are scripted, totally, sarcastic entertainment. It does make me consider my own issues, but what doesn't.

I'm a Bravo fan, too. I 100% know lots of reality shows are scripted, but the idea of therapists on reality shows takes away credibility, for me.
Thanks for this!

i mentioned this show in the General forum.

even being scripted its completely nonsensical and stupid.

want a more extremely realistic but fictional show about therapy? try InTreatment. each episode is a different day of the week with a different client session.

Totally agree. I thought, who would actually pay money for this kind of "therapy"?

There are people/therapists like that I imagine. We only really see an hour a week of our T's lives, in a little room, often not theirs (a clinic or shared setting), etc. We're different with each person we relate to and I'm sure T's are too. But I think LA is a "different" environment than someplace I'd be comfortable with in the first place (or NY City) so it gets even further from my own "reality" and seems more off.

i dont think its so much LA more so than its these specific therapists. sure these people have masters degrees or phds whatever - does that really qualify them to be around people. we all know that a lot of therapists should just NOT be therapists. its like someone pushing themselves into a career field when they clearly shouldnt be there for whatever reason.

plus in my mind any mental health professional who would agree to do THIS kind of show and think its ok to make this kind spectacle of themselves AND their clients is not professional to me. i think therapy is a sort of service that the therapists need to uphold the field to a higher esteem. people ALREADY make fun of therapy and the whole mental health profession and this...is just ridiculous.

What took it over the top for me is when "Dr. V" went to the gay club with her clients. What therapist does that?!

Semi-related, but did anyone watch Survivor last season with the sex therapist? The same way that LA Shrinks (real or not) have to deal with the disclosure that comes with being on tv, so did this therapist. I wonder how that all worked out. I, for one, can say it would definitely weird me out to see my therapist on tv, especially in a bikini!

"You sound fat on the phone." Who says that to a therapist, much less another person.

Oh my. I clicked on episode 2 and was disgusted after less than a minute. I wonder if the clients agreed to be on TV? If not, there's a huge confidentiality issue being broken by the therapist.

im sure they are. theres not many clients on there to begin with. plus everyone involved gets compensated im sure.

the one female client that keeps screaming during the therapy sessions is ridiculous. even the therapist said people try to display their smptoms and problems to make themselves more believable. but i can tell you that some therapists have said i dont have a dx once because i dont "show" the symptoms. ridiculous.

I've tried watching it. I can't take them seriously. I understand the Bravo shows are scripted to some degree, but I think they are making therapists and the profession look bad--scripted or not. I hope the show doesn't have a 2nd season.
