FYI: I just wanted to let you guys know that tomorrow night, Saturday, April 20, in the US, there is a movie on Lifetime in the evening involving mental illnesses and psychotherapy.
![]() Here is the link to the page with a preview and info: Call Me Crazy: A Five Film - Official Movie Site - myLifetime.com From what I can tell, there are five people struggling with different mental illnesses, and the film is five short films, actually. They have PTSD, Bipolar, Depression, Schizophrenia, and it doesn't say what the fifth person is dealing with. It could be triggering for some, I imagine. So, watch it with care. Anyway, I'll be watching! Have a great weekend! ![]() |

My T told me about this last night. A family member of hers did the PTSD part. She went to the film festival over the weekend.

Well, they are promoting it as a "world" premiere! Haha!
I have it scheduled to record, but I'm sure it will be triggering. The tv info says it focuses "on challenges facing families" on dealing with mental illness. My family doesn't know, so they don't have to deal. It's just me. ![]() |

Anne Heche chronicles stories of pain and redemption, hurt and healing. The memoir Call Me Crazy comes from an actress whose private life and personal choices have made her a household name .
Interesting timing . Isn't this government pointing a finger at mental illness as a contributing factor to gun violence at this very moment ? Yes they are . This is what society says to people who say ,* What the hell is going on in this world* . If it was true to the point , there would be in this film the addressing to the fact that most veterans of the war are not given satisfactory if any counseling for the trauma they have experienced. If this was a film true to the point on mental health understanding wouldn't this be a documentary and not a star casted 'World Premiere Event' ??? Please ...a shame this is putting a spin as to how people should see emotional /mental health and not what it really is . |

You won't find Anne Heche's name as the writer of this film by the way . This is a fictional film , a writer's film .

Also, the film is partnering with NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, a huge, non-profit group that supports those struggling with mental illnesses and their families. I can only hope that they would not support a film that portrayed mental illness in an evil manner. Also, the film does touch on problems with veterans. One of the stories centers on a character who returns from the war and suffers from PTSD. |

I just watched this and I found it incredibly moving. I did not think it sensationalized mental illness in any way, and the focus on the effects on families came through loud and clear. It's definitely a little oriented towards an uplifting message (there is hope for those with serious mental illnesses, and treatment works). I thought the characters were very well done, and the portrayals of mental illness pretty realistic. I also appreciated that the PTSD case was an example of military sexual assault, which is an important and underreported problem.
My favorite interaction in the entire film takes places between a schizophrenic woman and her younger sister, around the time when they are in their early 20's. Younger sister: "You tried to strangle me with my nightgown and all I could think of is why is hello kitty smiling?" Older sister: "You have to stop taking that personally." |

I watched it last night and was very moved by it, on a variety of levels. I did find myself thinking some of it was unrealistic or slanted toward a particular view that isn't always true (like with treatment it all ends well) but I don't think it ruined the film or anything.
It did a very good job of showing what it is like to be a family member of a person suffering from a mental illness. The one that hit home the very most for me was the girl whose mother had bipolar. The feelings written all over the girl's face were so close to how I experienced my upbringing. It was not the same circumstance at all - yet I could relate to her. Shame, fear, trying to get attention but never getting it, trying to "fix" things, the isolation and not being able to bring friends home or even be open enough to have many friends, walking on eggshells and learning to be hyper vigilant, being scared of what you will find when you get home after school, being parentified and feeling anger at her for not being the mom you needed, feeling bad that you feel angry etc. etc.Though, i thought the ending of that one was a bit unrealistic too... |

I watched it. for fiction (not based on reality of what a person with mental disorders go through) they did a good job. but I think it would have been better if the chow had been a mini series where each story line had more time. just when you start getting to know the character and their "story" the writer concluded the story. I found myself thinking.. ok so what happened next, where is...how did ....why was....
kind of like a cliff hanger for me... |
