The Shadow - our dark side - the aspects of ourselve we deny THe Animus - the masculine side (of women?) The Anima - the feminine side (of men) The Persona - the masks we wear & the face we show the world. |

Are you talking Jung archetypes? Read under "Theory":
Carl Jung They are something we all have, "mother figure", "male", "female", etc. We all have an idea of the idea/l of those ("crone", "maiden", etc.). The "shadow", kind of one's unconscious or hidden stuff, etc.

Are they in us when we're born or does our unconscious create them through life.

So we create them based on society's images. Ie, a child watching say Walt Disney films with the wicked step mother would then use that?

I have a hard time believing that we're born with them, too - then again, recent gene research is finding that the interaction between our DNA and our ancestors' environment is much more complicated than we had thought. The old school of thought is that what our ancestors experienced in their lifetimes has no effect on the genes that they pass down to us. It's possible, though, that their experiences may influence "markers" on our genes that change how they operate. There's a really interesting study on that here. As for the encoding of a collective unconscious in our genes... I have no idea how that would work or if it is so, but I think it's possible. |
