It has struck me lately how many people go into this proffession wounded, most come out healed before they even see any clients buts quite a lot of them don't. The result? They use their clients to meet their needs. They focus all of the attention on them rather than the clients.
It is a shame really that they do so much harm because I genuinely believe that they believe they are helping. Here is a link for therapist types, see what you think: Psych Gripe: Therapist Types: The Narcissist Also here is a link to a college in Ireland that was run by wounded healers and did so much harm before anyone stepped in. It was a shocking case and not the first either; Therapy Groups - Dialogue Ireland After I read about this today, I don't think I will ever trust a t again. I felt so sick after it |

I am sorry that you can not find a T that fits you like a glove. You deserve it.

You know you bring up an interesting point. I don't think there's enough vetting of therapists and their ability to keep their own crap under control.
I was due to start my T training this year but bowed out because i couldn't in my heart go into training for a profession that requires me to be mentally stable and have my own stuff under control, when clearly it isn't yet. Maybe it's just perfectionism on my part but when i start my training i want to be the best i can be, i want to be in a good stable place and feel like i've successfully resolved most of my issues. I honestly felt that anything less than that was disingenuous and actually could turn out to be dangerous for future clients. I've had crappy therapists and i never want to cause the type of pain i've experienced from such therapists.

I'm very sorry about your negative views and/or experiences with Ts. That has not been my experience.

I have experienced several narcissists in my life (as in, actually fit the criteria for NPD as stated by the DSM-IV)...both of my parents and two long-time boyfriends...but never in a T, and I have been in therapy for 30 years.
I hope you are able to find a T who can help you and support you monalisasmile; they are out there. ![]() |

The therapist I saw about 15 years ago was probably a raging narcissist. She told me she was the only therapist in my city who could do couple's counseling properly, she told me I could not quit without her permission, she told me I loved her, she told someone else I knew who saw her that if the acquaintance quit seeing her and went to work (she had been on short term disability and wanted to go back to work) that she would fail and her children would be taken away (the woman had a supportive husband and the children had a therapist who said they were doing great), and other horror stories about her abound.(I found out after I quit seeing her).
Happily I only stayed a few short months. There was definitely no regret when I quit for me.

Mona, while I haven't always been helped by Ts they have usually been totally professional. There is a good T out there for you. Don't give up!

There are wounded healers out there. I can only speak of my experiences. I had one when I saw a counsellor. They don't need as many qualifications to be able to rent an office and put a counsellor sign up. I think that sort of attracts the wounded type.
But I see a psychoanalyst now which requires a deeper qualification and time to qualify. I think wounded healers would be put of by that. They just want the quick fix and in type of approach. Basically because as you say, they are wanting to fix their wounds so have little understanding of what is actually required to be if help to someone. |

The T's I have worked with long-term have all been very professional and I never felt they brought their own stuff into our sessions. I did reject a few therapists pretty quickly when they brought their own issues up really early on. That creeped me out and I never went back; good choice as far as I was concerned.
