My therapist and I have this thing we do at the end of each session. I ask him a question that requires some thought, then he give me his answer at the next session. It's designed so I can get to know him better. So you'll get an idea of the types of questions, here's an example of some I've asked him:
1) If you could wake up tomorrow with complete mastery of one skill, what would that skill be? 2) If post secondary education had not been an option, what do you think you would be doing for a living right now? 3) What 3 books would you want with you if you were stranded on a deserted island? Can you help me think of some more questions in the same vein? |

Out of interest, why do you feel the need to find out all this information about your T and his life, and is he happy to freely give it? I'm not criticising - just interested.
How about: - If you could have one superpower, what would it be? - What time of year is your favourite and why? |

I think it helps me to view him as human and not idealize him, which has been a problem with previous Ts. He participates freely and seems to enjoy it.

You could "trick" him and get more personal too; ask him questions like if he were you, what concrete step would he take next :-)

It seems an interesting approach. Does it lead to discussion?
I think I would think the therapist was messing with me when they answered such questions or like me could give any number of valid answers to each question so that the information had no real meaning.

Sounds cool, I like it.
If you had one more day what would you do? What's your favorite color and how does it describe your personality? Do you prefer suit and tie or suit or bow tie and why! |

What have you found is the one key factor in clients that get better vs. clients that never move forward in their lives?

What is one of your pet peeves?
Why did you choose this profession? What was the most difficult experience you've ever gone through? What do you find challenging about your career? What was your most embarrassing moment? Are you happy in life? What are some of your hobbies? I wish my T wanted to do this too! |

If you could write a note to your younger self, what would you say in only 2 words?

What's your favorite song? And play it in session.
What do you like to eat? (And bring some to share?) I'm not sure I'd like to use my T time this way but I'm definitely interested in hearing what it's like for you. |

What made you want to be a therapist? From the office it looks like you see kids fairly often. How does it differ than adult therapy? On the bookcase behind you, what is the blanket for? |
