Hi,

I'm new here I have a question about Dr/Patient confidentiality. This past year, my family physician prescribed me vyvanse because she felt I showed textbook symptoms and only did so under the condition that I go get tested. Well, long story short, I ran into some money problems and couldn't afford the $200 prescription or the testing so I only finished half the testing.

Because my ugdiagnosed ADD is really affecting my life, I want to go get tested. First, I need to go see a therapist, and to explain my long and complicated story, I need to include the part about my Dr. giving me that prescription and explain how much it helped me. I want to be completely honest with the therapist, but I don't want to get my Dr. in any trouble. She said not to tell anyone about giving it to me until I was officially diagnosed because she wasn't supposed to do that. Is she protected if I tell him about this or is it a big enough deal for me to even worry? I just don't want to get her in any trouble as she was only trying to take care of me. Thank you for your time

K

Thanks for this!

I would disclose it. The information needs to be given since the medication has helped you in the past. Simply state what happened as you did here. I doubt that anything will happen to the Dr.

I agree. I would be honest about what has helped in the past. It will give a starting point about how to help you. I don't think that she could get in trouble with it.

What would be the difference in getting retested vs. going to a therapist? Do you mean a psychiatrist who would be prescribing the meds?

Your T can't do anything about that, because you have confidentiality with your therapist and that can only be broken if you plan on killing yourself or someone else. Therefore you can be completely honest to your T about what happened with your Doc and they can't do anything because they can't tell.
