Anybody ever watch it? I've only seen season 1 so far, but I think it's an amazing show. I especially love the episodes when Paul sees Gina to help with his own counter transference and other issues as well. And then of course the relationship between Paul and Laura. I know it's ethically wrong to root for them, but I can't help it.
“I’m good at loving books. I’m good at loving soft bed sheets. I’m good at loving coffees and teas. I am good at loving things that can’t love me back, that don’t have the power to leave. And maybe, that’s why I love them.” |

Hi, I started watching it a few weeks ago. But I had to start from season 3! Now I'm watching season 1 and I love it, but I like Adele (Paul's therapist in season 3) better than Gina so far. Well maybe it's still too soon to say for me as I've just started season 1.

I loved Gina, was okay with Adele, and hated Paul.

I started Season 1 about a month ago and now I'm in the middle of Season 2. It's a great show but Paul frustrates me sometimes, especially in season 2. I liked how he dealt with Sofie. Sometimes the arguing between Paul and Gina gets to be a bit much. But it does show how therapists are human and have a hard time having insight into their own lives. I really dislike his wife.

I loved his wife. I wanted his wife and gina to get together and leave him.

I loved the show, save the completely INAPPROPRIATE patient-client relationship with the one client. I was disappointed in how the series ended though, when Paul starts going to a new therapist.
His boundary crossing with that patient made me want to vomit - it was just so wrong. |

I just discovered this how via a short youtube clip, I went out immediately and bought all 3 seasons on DVD. I don't have HBO and would have never seen it on it's original run.
I love it! ![]() Gina rocks! I've never been a fan of Dianne Wiest, but her portrayal of therapist is excellent. Never liked Paul's wife, she seemed like a downer to me. She had an affair, somehow that seem to be skirted away. I'm on Season 3 right now, week 4. I like Sunil, not sure if he has something up his sleeve. |

I started watching this show a few months ago. I think I'm a few episodes away from the end of Season 1. I really don't like Gina, I find her annoying. I felt sorry for Laura, especially since I can relate going through my own transference with my T. I really like Sofie, she's so feisty, yet vulnerable and sweet in some ways. I love how sometimes she catches Paul off guard.
I wonder how much does the show influence you in your sessions, or change how you think of your own T? |

Wow. I am surprised at how many people dislike gina but like paul. I would not have stayed through the first appointment with a therapist like paul. I started fast forwarding through the Paul episodes and would watch the gina ones in full. Sometime forwarding through the whiny paul parts.

What is it about Paul that you don't like, stopdog? I'm not sure there would have been anything that would have given me immediate redflags in a first session with him.

His entire demeanor put me off. He was intrusive, controlling and condescending.

I loved that show and was sad when it ended. As far as I know, there's never been a show like that before, and I don't like reality shows. I watched one episode of the other more recent therapy series (forget the name of it) about a therapist who uses Skype, but I did not like it at all.
Paul was good at what he did (I loved his interpretations), and I did like him, but he didn't contain his issues which got annoying sometimes. He was too serious, lacking sense of humor and also dramatic about everything (but also passionate in a way). It seemed to me he got some of his needs fulfilled by his patients (not just Laura), which should have been fulfilled by his wife. Yet, he was kind of closed off to her; avoidant. He had intimacy issues. Truly an extraordinary actor though. Adele could definitely help Paul with his issues more than Gina, because stuff was forced to the surface with Adele through the transference, while Gina was kind of, I don't know, less psychoanalytic...Although it's been a long time since I saw the show. I liked Adele's persona as far as qualities in a therapist go, but felt Paul was much more interesting! Without Paul's background and issues being highlighted, the show would not have been as entertaining. Last edited by Anonymous32735; Dec 15, 2013 at 07:48 PM. Reason: corrected a type |

I've watched the first two seasons and part of the third ... Gina irritated me completely; and I don't think I would have liked Paul for a therapist, his issues kept getting in the way of treatment; my favourite stories were the ones about Sophie and April

I think the show influenced me a lot in how I see my own T. If anything it makes me even more interested in his private life. It's hard to have such intimate conversations with someone and not want to know more about their lives, especially if you begin to really care about each other. “I’m good at loving books. I’m good at loving soft bed sheets. I’m good at loving coffees and teas. I am good at loving things that can’t love me back, that don’t have the power to leave. And maybe, that’s why I love them.” |

I loved the show, and Sophie was a favorite. Sunil was the most interesting, I think, along with the military pilot. I found Paul far less annoying when he was working with men. The involvement with Laura, for me, just highlighted his serious issues with adult women. I liked both Gina and Adele, though they came close to running Adele off the tracks toward the end. I thought the acting all around was superb, and I'd love to see the original series.

I liked the first season. Plot-wise, I’d say the 1st season was the best, the other seasons were a bit ‘bland’ or at least, not as strong. I also found Sunil's character really creepy too, btw. I won't expand in case some haven't seen all episodes.
In terms of the main characters. I wouldn’t have liked to have a T like Paul. But Gina, yes (or Adele, for that matter). I started to dislike Paul when you saw how pathetically he behaved with Gina. I mean, yes, by all means open up to your T, let it all out etc. etc. but using foul language and at times, verbally abusing/attacking Gina?! It seems he couldn’t take any criticism or any responsibility for his feelings and/or actions without lashing out at Gina. I mean, hello, yes you are a human being but you are also a T. Shocking behaviour at times, esp. as a 'T'. Some modicum of decorum wouldn’t be amiss. That’s when the dislike set in. (PS: not to mention his ‘behaviour’ with Laura) Same in subsequent seasons where he showed more and more of his true colours. I just couldn’t stand him. He sounds such a hypocrite at times and such a (verbal) bully – first Gina and then crushing and trying and trying and trying to push it with Adele. That man really seems to have a problem (issues?) with women. |

I liked Paul, and Gina. I think the way Paul was with Gina is a lot like a lot of people are with their therapists. He was very bratty. Loved it! Very human.
Of all the characters I think Mia in season 2 was my favorite. Hopelessly flawed, but genuine. Sophie was a strong second. I think the show did a fantastic job of illustrating how complex human thought/emotion really is. The things that lie just under the surface that motivate us. Paul's in session demeanor, reminded me a lot of my first therapist without whom I can say that I wouldn't be alive today. Seeing him out of session was a little traumatic at first. It was an insight (albeit fictionalized) that I didn't really need to see at the time. It ended up being a more good than harm situation though. Very provocative, interesting stuff.

I have season 1 on DVD (someone gave it to me) and I found it so irritating that I couldn't finish the first episode.. does it actually get better? It seemed to be making a joke out of therapy.

I've watched the whole show, yes, and I liked it a lot, especially the first two seasons. Didn't enjoy the abrupt ending and the way Paul changed toward the last season, if I recall correctly.

I watched it all and loved the show. I liked Paul. Because he sometimes behaved inappropriately, he reminded me that Ts ate not perfect. They too are human with all the same needs, wants, and desires as the rest of us.
My favorite patients were Sofie and Mia. I loved Gina. She was real and honest with him about the way she saw things even though I'm not sure she was always right. I appreciate a T with a strong personality. At first, I didn't like Adele but I grow to appreciate her style. I was looking forward to seeing what she would do in season 4. I was disappointed when the show ended...):

I have the first season on DVD and I love it. I haven't gotten to the other seasons as I love the characters from the first season so much but I guess I probably should. Too bad it's not streaming on Netflix.
