Has anyone here tried EMDR?? Either on its own as your main focus of therapy, or paired with another form of therapy?

How was it? Was it effective?

Also, what type of person/situations is EMDR intended to help?

I'm asking all of this because when I was in a hospital, I was advised by a therapist there to try it or at least look into it.

I've never tried it myself, but some people swear by it.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) was designed to treat PTSD by working through individual traumas, one memory at a time in a controlled manner, once a client was stable and prepared for the intense processing work.

It's done in eight phases and requires special training on the part of the clinician.

Here you go: EMDR Institute, Inc. - What is EMDR?

I know it is for PTSD and have read about it, but I wanted to know people's opinions about it or if it has actually worked.

I have a problem with suppressed memories of specific (not all) abuse and csa; but I know those memories are there and completely affect everything in my present life. I am just not sure if EMDR would be possible for me since I can't remember details and certain instances actually happening.

I had every sign and all the behaviors of csa when I was younger. To this day I still have triggers that make me feel sick or anxious and certain other things that can't be explained. I know I need to deal with the underlying event/problem but I don't know how if I can't remember.

That's the part of EMDR that was confusing to me..

You might try the myptsd.com website: that type of situation is much more commonly discussed there.

csa = child sexual abuse
trigger is something that invokes strong emotion or flashbacks

I've never tried EMDR but have wondered about it.

Traumatic events cause faulty memory encoding, leading to PTSD anxiety. EMDR supposedly creates new neural pathways through remembering the events/processing them with T.
