Thought that I'd write about a very positive development with CBT T.

I have had a driving phobia for years, although I do have a license and drive within a certain geographical area I feel "safe" driving in.

I was hoping that CBT T would get permission (because of potential liability) from his clinic to get in the car with me. He DID end up getting permission and today is the first day he went driving with me.

It was great. He pointed out when I seemed most anxious, how anxiety caused me to make a traffic violation (just one), and what I might consider trying.

He was so supportive and patient. It means so much to me to have someone finally help me with this problem. I tried to tell him that but I don't think he grasped how deeply meaningful it is to me. My parents did little to help me learn growing up. It has been a real struggle.

just wanted to share a good experience.

I was terrified of driving, and I had someone who had a master's in professional counseling teach me to drive because I refused to even try with anyone else.

Interesting, as I have said before I believe that there are very few circumstances where I believe that it is appropriate for you and your Therapist to be driving in the same car together, but since you have a fear of driving than I guess it is OK for you.

Hi Rterroni--

I'm curious, why would it be inappropriate? I'm sorry if I missed your comment elsewhere.

Just to clarify, he was helping me learn how to manage my anxiety and stop panic attacks brought on by my driving phobia. If we were doing this as a social thing I'd understand how that would be inappropriate but I honestly would like your thoughts on this.

Well I don't think it is appropriate to drive to a normal social activity with your Therapist.

ah, I get get it RTerroni. Thanks for clarifying.

We didn't go to a destination, we drove around as he helped monitor what makes me anxious and how to manage it. We just ended up back at his office

I appreciate your honest feedback!
