My current therapist says this all the time, "sounds like you're doing okay" or "a lot to cope in your present situation". But I don't really feel like I'm doing okay. Sure I do a lot to cope: stay busy with activities, practice the mindfulness that I learned, and a few other things I learned in DBT, but I'm still dwelling over obsessive thoughts and still feel depressed or anxious a lot.
She's not very pro-active (honestly, not very many of my T's have been) and most of the time after our visits, our talks leave me more anxious. We also debated on whether I have "pure O" obsessive disorder or just GAD. She insisted that "pure O" OCD is not a diagnosis and you cannot have the obsessive thoughts without the physical compulsive behaviors, but I've done a lot of research and found that people can have obsessive thoughts without the behaviors. Or more likely, they have mental rituals instead of the physical. Right? Good thing is that she's transferring to a new business soon. I have the choice of transferring with her or having another T. I'm thinking of going with another T. Opinions? |

I believe in pure obsessiveness without rituals as a disorder, or at least a component of another disorder (from my own personal experience). From what you wrote it does sound like you can use a new T. Mine never assumes that I'm doing okay, even when I kind of am.

I've had an old T tell me I had OCD obsessions in 2006, that's why I argued with this T. I know my obsessions aren't typical of regular anxiety which she insisted they are. That whole discussion made me obsess.

I think that a T's statement of "it sounds like you're doing okay" is MEANT to be praise for how hard you're working, but I also think it's presumptive, probably misguided and invalidating. I could see asking if you were doing okay, but telling you that you were seems unhelpful to me.
My 2 cents. |

Sounds like a new T may be a good idea, especially if you are not feeling very validated or heard. Maybe she is not a good fit for your specific needs. I hope you find what you need or fix things with your T, if you decide to stick with her.

I'm sorry that your T has said that to you and I agree with HH that a new T might not be a bad idea if you don't feel heard and validated...
Once I was telling my exT how bad day I had that I couldn't have got out the bed, I spent the whole day in pajamas watching movies and tv series for the whole day, no food nor drinks etc. and he only commented "it seems like you had a very relaxing day"... I hated him for it and now I have a new, cool T who would never say anything like that ![]() I also believe in "pure O" (i.e. intrusive thought without physical actions); however, I agree that probably it is not an official diagnosis according to DSM... |
