If a T writes to me and I'm too scared to read it, I get my wife to check it first. But a T doesn't have that option.

How do you think they cope?

I bet some T's do experience anxiety over letters or emails. Especially if they are newer in the field. Who knows what a client could have to say? Especially if the T is worried about the client for something going on in his/her life, or if the T knows that a session did not go well recently, this may make them a little tense until they read the letter.

Personally, I've had the experience of giving my T a long letter while in a session and having her read it in front of me. I told her a lot of open, frank things and was more honest than I usually am. I think my T was stunned about the things I told her, and she acted a little awkward since I told her so much at once. I think she finds it easier to respond to things in the moment instead of responding to an entire letter full of things. So perhaps my T was a little uneasy about how she was going to handle the letter as she was reading it. I could of course be completely off and have read her reaction wrongly.

I don't know how they cope. I know I've given my T a hand written letter before and he thought it was a suicide note. I'm sure that made him uneasy.

I don't really think they would be ... they don't have the same emotional investment in us that we do in them. If they do, then that's a problem.

Sorry to be blunt!

I agree with jacq, sadly, but in theory could they have someone read it in their supervision?

Just read it. That's the responsibility of being a T. Coping with that anxiety without having someone else check it out, since it's confidential.

Yes, it's possible but I just have a hard time thinking of a T having that much anxiety over reading a letter. Not due to lack of care, but it's just a letter. A letter from someone the T is supposed to be helping. I can imagine being very scared about what some letters might say but I don't think having someone else read it would help.

Then again, I don't even do this in my personal life, so maybe it's just me.

This never occurred to me, and I guess it's possible. When I think about my last therapist she was such a giant in mind, so I know that would not have been one of her fears.
