Do therapists miss their clients when they go on vacation?

Do therapists miss their clients when they go on vacation? I always wondered. I wonder if he'll think about me when he's gone. I just wonder. When I go on vacation I try not to think about work.

I am sure that they try to leave work at the office.

Probably not a lot.

I dont think they miss us. They relax from their job.

i hope not! i need my t to be clear headed when he gets back so he can handle my problems lol.

i know that sounds weird. i am attached to my t, but in kind of a strange way (or maybe not so strange? idk). i don't want him to flake out on me. so if that means a tropical vacay with his spouse and lots of not thinking about work, then i am 100% on board.

i don't think ts probably forget completely, but i don't think they give it much thought.

Hey tangerine, mmm miss their clients not so sure. I'd like T to miss me but I think miss might not be the right word. I know I think of my own clients, and wonder how they are and hope they are alright- I wouldn't say I miss them. So I wonder if T is more on those lines than missing me.

I don't miss my clients or my students. I doubt if a therapist would miss me or give me any thought at all.

Probably not much. My guess is they try to stay as focused on anything but work as they can. As much as I love my students and spend most of my life with them, when I'm on vacation, they are not terribly high on my thought list. That's my time for family and close friends. I'm guessing T's are very much the same.

Probably not. One of my Ts said he would miss seeing me if I were to go on vacation. I was thinking that if I was on vacation somewhere, I don't think I would miss him very much.

A lot of t's must be on vacation right now, or coming up soon! I would think probably not.... although just like anyone else, I'd think if they saw something that reminded them of us...they might give us a quick thought! Say if I was a goat farmer, and T was on vacation and saw a goat, that may make me pop into her mind for a second. That's pretty normal for anyone, I think. (the goat farmer thing is just an example....I don't have any goats LOL!)

Do you miss your customers when you go on vacation? I know I don't.

I don't know if it would be a good thing for therapists to miss their clients while on vacation. They're suppose to be able to separate their work life from their home life.

A few yrs. ago I was shopping at the mall and my therapist saw me and said hello. It was a little strange to see him outside of therapy.

Mine didn't say she missed me when she was away but she did say she had thought of me. That was good enough for me.

I imagine they think of us, I don't think they really miss us. We are work, after all.

I think it's highly unlikely. They might have passing thoughts about their clients and wonder if they're ok, but I think it's more likely that they'd try to leave work at the back of their mind and try to relax/have a good time.

I'm sure we cross their minds but miss us? Hardly!

I don't miss my students when I'm away from them. I do think of them though. So I'm sure T's are the same. The way I feel right now though, I hope mine had thought of me and will apologise next time I go in.

Does this mean I should feel guilty for feeling and expressing anxiety about his vacation. It's been a major cause of anxiety and distress for me. It's been tough.

Not at all; it's quite normal to feel that way. Your T should understand. It's hard when they go on vacation if you feel like they are a big part of your support network. The relationships we have with our Ts is quite unique...it's not easily replaced with a friend or family member if they are unavailable to us, and it can be very unsettling.

feelings give us information and you feel what you feel. i don't think you *should* feel something or nothing or anything. if it's a point of anxiety, i would encourage you to talk about it with him and see if you can find some ways to cope ahead. i would be surprised if you were the only one of his clients having a hard time.

are you concerned you won't be able to cope? are you worried you'll need support and won't have any? that anxiety can help you define what it is you specifically need.

In my case, I would say yes. T misses me SOOOOOOOOO much!! He will even give me an example of when he thought about me - "i was looking at the mona lisa and i thought to myself blah blah blah". Whereas i will have a REAL example - "the news reported that the floods in europe uncovered a 400 year old artifact and i thought of your travel companion". If you cant say something real (or real funny) about a person...!

I want T's to be rested after vaca and not burnt out, but of course part of me wants to be missed.

Main T will send a postcard from wherever he is vacationing. Now I send him a postcard if I go anywhere interesting (Sending a card from Shanghai was a thrill for me--finally I got to go somewhere he hasn't been)

CBT T hinted at a "grand adventure" in his 7 week vaca, as of this week. He voiced an anxiety about what it will be like when he comes back? How hard will it be to adjust?

When my CBT T comes back from vacation, the first session with him always feels like his brain is still vacationing...I have just come to expect it now! He is great otherwise so I figure he must need time to get re-oriented again and I don't hold it against him.
