We covered some difficult stuff for me yesterday. During the session, the nausea started and I have that horrible, numb feeling in my forehead and just feel really distant from everything. I can handle all of that except the nausea. I am tired of that. I have tried the grounding techniques my T has suggested, but they are not helping. Anyone have tips they would care to share for dispelling the post-therapy hang-over/pukey feeling? Oh, also, it would be helpful if they were things I could do at work. Thanks.

I know this probably isn't the most healthy thing but for me actually puking usually puts an end to that feeling.

You made me laugh, Ready. And as it turns out, laughing seems to help.

I know it sounds silly too, but I agree with stopdog, you might just want to try throwing up. I had horrible nausea caused by anxiety for several months after my SA, and when ever it would happen I would jut throw up. It really did feel better afterwords, and eventually with more therapy the anxiety decreased and so did the nausea.

You might also talk with your talk with your T about pulling back on some topics, until you are better able to cope with anxiety, or you might talk with her about having a calming guided five minute relaxation at the end of session (that is if she does things like that).

I am always relieved when suffering from stomach flu to just get it over with.

Whereas I do often just throw up before an appointment, the suggestion here was from RTS.
And a good suggestion it was too for stopping the feeling fairly directly.

Peppermint settles the stomach, so does Ginger Peach Tea. Some basic acupuncture might be helpful in fighting it off as well, you can find a how-to video here.

Sometimes I'm nauseous before appointments, so I pop a few of those soft peppermint candies in my bag and eat them in the waiting room. I hate puking, so any remedy that outfoxes the nausea sounds like a good time to me.

I don't handle nausea well. My pdoc prescribes Zofran that I always have available.

I consider my ability to puke as a gift or talent...I'm always tempted to list this when people play those silly get to know you games where you are supposed to list something no one knows about you.

I can puke on mental command ...no fingers down throat or anything...

Trust me it's not an eating disorder thing ..I don't binge..it's just a way to relieve stress or yucky mental crap or actually sick... I consider it to be a positive outcome from my dysfunctional family... I learned how when my dad used to make us eat sardine sandwiches and if we didn't eat it he made us sit at table all night...my sisters were stupid..they would stay there all night...I just ate it and then when to bathroom and puked it up... Kept everyone happy.

Even if it's not "politically correct", I really can imagine that sometimes it is a gift... Because I am completely opposite... Once I got extremely strong allergic reaction to a medicine and already few minutes after taking it I felt that something was really bad and that the best way was to remove from the body asap... I did whatever I could but it didn't work, so 40 min later when its concentration in the body was the highest, I got anaphylaxis and was one foot in the other world...

Sorry for hijacking the thread

Slowly sipping hot tea sometimes helps me with that feeling. Also this seems counterintuitive but I find being hungry makes it worse. I try to eat something small before therapy. Walking for 15-20 minutes can also be helpful.

You can make your own ginger ale, as potent as you like…I've been meaning to try it and keep it on hand for stomach upsets….

I make my own using a slightly different recipe and just plain yeast. It is great and fun to do.

If you like hot teas and ginger.....I swear by fresh ginger root, grate it into a pot with boiling water and let it brew to as spicy as you can handle. Then drink sweetened with a teaspoon of honey per cup.

Also great for winter ills, which I have now lol. Currently sipping a brew as I type.

Take care and hope one of these suggestions from everybody helps
Thanks for this!

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. I went with peppermint, because I already had some. That helped some. Before next week, I'll go to the grocery store and get ginger. Thank you all!

my tips:

eating ice cubes
watching trashy reality TV
going out for a takeout meal (Chinese or something)
getting an early night
making up a story in your head
online shopping
listening to music
taking a shower
surround yourself with others - you don't need unnecessary thinking time
