I'm currently seeing a pdoc that is not very helpful as far as therapy is concerned and, through trial and error, that a lot of pdocs are all prescription and no therapy. That being said, what other types of counselor/therapist people should I go see that will be helpful or that you have found helpful? I don't even know where to start looking. For the record, I plan to see this person in addition to my pdoc.

Ask your pdoc for a referral to a therapist

I don't want to necessarily tell her I'm gonna be seeing someone else on the side because I think she thinks she's doing real therapy :-X

Then ask Google. See what options are available in your area. And don't be afraid to try out several before you find the right match.

pdocs are not therapists, they are for med management. The usual treatment is med management PLUS therapy, meaning you would need to see a therapist as well. Pdocs are not supposed to be your therapist or counselor.

My psychiatrist does talk therapy and meds. He's very good. Heaps better than a psychologist because they don't know the effects of meds or lifestyle choices in the body and brain. Plus I can see him as much as I want and get $ back from Medicare. Medicare only covers 10 sessions with a psychologist. Nowhere enough for real work.

My Pdoc does therapy. He is good at it too... I go back and forth between hating him and loving (completely platonic) yet always understanding that he has my best interests at heart. It is rare to find a Pdoc that can do both med management and therapy well. I would suggest not looking at the credentials and instead trying to find someone you can work with.
Thanks for this!

Good. I was just saying that the 15 mins you get with a pdoc shouldn't be considered therapy.

Yeah I specifically asked my pdoc at the beginning if she just does meds or if she does therapy too. She said both but she's not good at both. Have any of you had good luck with a psychologist?

Yes...my Ts have had degrees like a Psy.D and Ph.D (those are both psychologists), and another has an MSW (Masters in Social Work). He is a LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker). They have all been helpful to me.

Pdocs are medical doctors, generally not therapists. Sure they ask about one's life and problems and maybe try to differentiate between what can be helped with drugs and what is a life problem to be addressed directly by the patient but a psychologist or social worker is often helpful too for longer-term or more in-depth discussion of one's life difficulties. I don't think Pdocs feel threatened by one choosing a therapist too.

There are several websites that list therapists and specialties for the united states.
Have you tried psychology today or therapytribe.com?

When searching for a new T, I generally look for therapists who take my insurance..which can be psychologists, social workers, etc. Then I look at experience, specialties and location.

My psychiatrist does therapy for any client who wants it. She's my therapist.
