My panic attacks are very closely linked with my asthma and recently ive been having a panic attack where i feel my chest and cough starting so i panic about not being able to breathe... Its a vicious cycle.

Anyway this comes up a lot when talking over CSA in therapy. Ive been having attacks everywhere since its getting colder and damper (chest gets worst) and im really scared i might have one in therapy. We have talked about it but i have this foreshadowing sense like its gonna happen.

What im asking is what should i do if i get an attack while im in therapy??? Obviously inhaler etc but idk what would you do?

I have worked on my breathing in therapy so I generally work really hard to control my breathing after taking my inhaler. My t tends to leave me to it these days apart from getting my medication. Does yours do breath work? Yep it might happen, but I find learning to control it in therapy where someone else is there just in case I can't get it under control has helped me in real life. It's a bit rubbish but for me it has been a major step in getting my asthma under control as it to can be stress related.

I would hope that your T would "talk you down", either helping you to breathe or helping you to relax.

I think you should ask doctor if you have asthma too, we can't know what is right because asthma and panic attack is not the same things.

T can help you with coping skills to stave off an attack, or help bring you out of it more quickly. I would not wait until you actually have an attack, I would bring this topic up soon, ask T to give you some ideas to help, and mention that you feel conditions are ripe for this to happen in session soon.

T would know better what to do than I would, but I really fear being out of control in front of others, so I really would not want to have an attack in session. Is this a feeling you share?

I've had asthma attacks and panic attacks but never both together.

I'd treat it like exercise-induced asthma and use my inhaler before therapy? Won't keep the panic away necessarily but will keep the asthma so you can concentrate better on the panic and where it is coming from and how to work with it, etc. without the added stress of the asthma.

I had one really bad panic attack in therapy, the incapacitating kind where I nearly passed out. I think although it's vulnerable to have one in front of a T, they will know what to do. My T asked me to uncross my legs and try to slow my breathing. She was lovely and very good in the moment. It took fifteen minutes for me to be able to talk, and she was patient and with me the whole time.

And neither in session.
