I am not sure why but I could not stop laughing in session. No matter what t said it just wouldn't stop. The laughter was coming from my toes. T looked concerned and I apologised, she asked if she could try something. I said ok, so she put a hand on my head and another on my back. The laughter was still rising, t didn't say anything just kept her hands in those positions. Eventually the laughter stopped and I immediately felt a sense of calm wash over me.
It was a really nice experience but I am nor sure what she did. Afterwards she said something was stirring within and laughter and crying are very closely connected.

That's interesting. I never thought about the two being closely connected.

Neither did I but it makes complete sense to me in that context. I couldn't let myself cry because I was afraid I would fall apart so the energy I repressed surfaces as nervous laughter.

I have had sessions like that, esp with this t. Sometimes he would start laughing too. Lately ive been getting more into yelling. That is new for me and feels very liberating.

Laughing is just another way to express emotion. And people don't always laugh when they're happy or something is funny. Often times, people laugh due to nervousness or to cover up pain. And the touching....well, that's not surprising it calmed you down. Touch is a very powerful tool. It's expression, communication, can be extremely healing or extremely harmful. My T often touches me to calm me down. But she touches my arm or leg.

Interesting. I wasn't allowed to cry so many times I would laugh when I got in trouble. Drove my parents crazy but I couldn't control it.

Me too and it always slips out at the most inappropriate times. In gestalt therapy they say anxiety is unsupported excitement which is spot on with me anyway.

I have Waking the Tiger also. I liked the parts I've read of the book, but I found it too triggering for me at the time. I should try to read it again...

My T has two LCSWs working under her. Every other week or so, this same gal comes in the same time I do to see one of them. She is SOOO loud! The walls were soundproofed, but I can practically hear every word she says, and she laughs hysterically. She's just so loud. One of my last sessions, my T apologized about it....and I actually said to her that working with someone like that must be much more pleasant. I told her I've often thought I was more like that, so I'd appear to be a pleasure to be around. She said NO, she's glad I'm not. She said if you truly are that happy in your life you wouldn't be here, so she said it would be a lot more work to work through that layer to get to what's underneath, and thanked me for being the way I am.
