Hi-
I like my T. But due to having to have insurance under ACA, and finally realizing I am able to have it, I know the practice I go to will not accept my new insurance. How do I tell this to T? I do not know what to do. I feel guilty just dropping her as she has really helped me. ![]() Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks!

This is beyond your control and if you have to find a different therapist, it's no reflection at all on your current T. First, check to make sure they really can't take your insurance. Then if they can't, just tell her the truth -- your insurance won't pay. She helped you a lot, but you have to go.
I'm sorry you're going through this difficulty. Take care! |

Ask if your T takes that insurance and if she doesn't then check with your insurance company. Sometimes insurance companies will let you see someone out of their network for a certain amount of time as long as your T is willing to work with them.

Thirding what SnakeCharmer said. Definitely double check about the insurance, these things are really unpredictable at times.
Also, definitely talk to your T. Depending on your situation (are you switching insurance companies, or getting brand new insurance?) sometimes Ts can find ways to make things happen. I've heard of people, for example, getting their Ts treated as in-network by filing papers for "continuity of care" (I think, I'm not sure of the details). Your T may have a solution that you don't know exists. Or they may not, but at least by talking to them - they'll know that they didn't do anything to scare you off, and you can keep the door open for future help if your situation changes. |

Is there any way you can pay out of pocket? Does your therapist have a sliding fee scale?

Of course talk to your T about it. There may be options that you are unaware of.

My T does not take my insurance, but my insurance will reimburse me for 70% of her fee. My T and I came up with a fee that worked for both of us when I switched to this insurance. I could see an in-network at for somewhat less, but I don't wish to switch from my T.

Thanks Everyone!
I really liked this T. I feel so guilty about leaving her. It is a group practice. I think if it was a T only thing, she would continue w/ me. I have to tell her how much her caring & sessions have helped me. Hugs!

Even within a group practice, there can sometimes be some freedom with billing (though not much) still could be worth a conversation.
Good luck! |
