I currently see a PsyD for weekly therapy. I'm thinking about finding a psychiatrist, as well. It looks like two different psychiatrists that take my insurances have different training. One is an MD, the other is a DO.

What is the difference?

Would you see a psychiatrist with a DO?

A DO is a doctor if orsteopathic medicine, which is just another designation for a doctor. As far as I know they are identical.

In the U.S. a DO and an MD are similar. However, that doesn't hold true for other countries (I've had people comment about DOs being quacks in other countries). I've had to explain to people not in the U.S. that DOs are held to a similar level of education/skill/etc as an MD.

No, I would not see a DO as a psychiatrist because I don't consider them equivalent to MDs. Oesteopathy is not evidence based and I want a doctor who practices evidence based medicine. So even if the rest of their curriculum is similar to that of of prospective MDs I wouldn't trust them to be competent.

Yes, I wouldn't rule them out based on their having a DO rather than an MD. You might want to find out where they did their post-graduate training. I'm guessing they did it in the same training programs as MDs, so I'd think they'd be similarly qualified.

You never really know for sure with any doctor, of course, until you see them.

A doctor from Brown University in Rhode Island receives a DO and is able to practice in Massachusetts, where you receive an MD.

I wasn't sure about your location (I'm not familiar with PNW as an acronym). If you're in the U.S. DOs *are* equivalent to MDs - they have the same standards of evidence based education. This is unusual to the U.S. If OP were outside the U.S. you would be correct. However in the U.S. I would definitely be open to seeing one.

Osteopathic medicine in the U.S.

It is similar. DO program is slightly less easier to get accepted to. My Ex stepdaughter kept applying and not getting accepted to MD programs due to her test scores being slightly on a lower side. She got accepted to DO.
