Just wondering about people's thoughts on this. I started it t weeks ago. There's been a lot of homework involved and I've several coping strategies in my new tool chest - some have already come in very handy. My mood certainly has elevated and I have won some very big battles against Anxiety and Depression.

Some people on this site are quite pleased with doing cbt and others have found not as useful. If it is working for you - then that is good. I personally found it not just useless but damaging. I will never engage in it again. But I would not tell someone else they shouldn't try it to see how it worked for them.

Good stuff.

Nuclear bombs talk therapy out of the water.

I recommend it to everyone.

I have had mixed experiences with CBT. I think it can be very helpful in the right context for some people if the practitioner is skilled. Unfortunately I have also run into practitioners who execute it very very poorly and at the same time insist it's the only helpful treatment, and if it isn't working the client is doing something wrong.

I'd say it's definitely worth trying, but if it ends up not working for a person, they shouldn't feel it means something is wrong with them. It doesn't work for everyone and greatly depends on the skill of the practitioner.

Works well for me. Needs practice, gets easier and more effective the more/longer you use it

Should be taught in schoo

I agree that it may not be for everyone....DBT, the offshoot of CBT (and actually a type of CBT) made me hella worse! It was so bad that my parents were like "hells no!" when a therapist said I needed it. I was a pure terror at home when I tried DBT and they didn't want to deal with me when I was doing all of those exercises. (And I still think those acronyms are lame-o....makes me feel like I'm in the 2nd grade again. Just give me a darn skill to learn and not some stupid word that has nothing to do with anything...I could never keep them all straight.) But, CBT.....awesome stuff, love it to bits, and I have quite a few books on it. CBT for Dummies (and the workbook) are pretty awesome.

I think it depends on what your issues are. I think CBT is great with anxiety and fears. However, it was not helpful in dealing with my transference. My new T. said CBT is not good for issues that are deep within me like neglect from childhood. You can't tell yourself to feel or think differently that easily. With ex T I KNEW I was being irrational and I didn't make sense but I my feelings were so strong I couldn't get my mind to overcome them. I didn't know until the very end that she was practicing CBT with me.
