I can not stop thinking about what my T said in a recent session...
I was talking about a mental health nurse having a pop because I have had quite a few short term blocks of therapy (4 in 6 years and not exactly tons of sessions) My T's response was (like she was talking to the MHN) "That's hardly 'lots', I would have said 'due to the amount of trauma I have had I will probably be in therapy for the rest of my life!' " ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What now?? She might need to lower her rates further for such a long term client- I'm only going to be 30 this year- unless she knows something I don't about my life span and my untimely demise.... ![]() I know therapy can be a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' thing- but really didn't expect to be in therapy for more than 5-10 years Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Perhaps this is a poor choice of words in the context of some blocks of therapy courtesy of the NHS . Like , " We can only offer CBT even though it's not what you need and you've had four sessions so you should be all better have a nice day now! ''. I think your T means you need longer term therapy , but how long you need is your decision.

I agree with Out There.
I didn't expect to be in therapy for such a long time but I start year 8 (with the same therapist) in March. I haven't had any real trauma in my life either. Rather it has been a series of stressful, anxiety producing events that has kept me there (deaths in the family, empty nest, and other assorted issues around loss). Also, I have bipolar disorder so I fully expect to be in therapy throughout my life. I hope you like your therapist if you are in it for the long haul. Ultimately, it's your call.

The NHS is awful for that.
"You probably have PTSD but we won't diagnose it because then we have to give you proper treatment- so we will tell you that you have it but unofficially and then send you to time to talk for 6 sessions that will be useless because by the time you have got to know the T, it will be finished- but you have done this once already- why aren't you fixed?" I'm sure they do it to make people pay privately. The thing is every time I have seen a T through NHS something else has been going on that was big. Like finding out I was nearly 6 months pregnant, becoming homeless, ect So I wasn't exactly able to deal with my trauma Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have long term trauma as well as more recent trauma. I've just got a breathing space almost for the first time in my life. I've been in therapy for 6 years and can easily see around another 4 years ( god willing ) for what I want to work on. I will have what I want / need.
