What does anybody know about Trauma Conversion Therapy? It is new & difficult to learn about. My T did it with me. It seemed helpful at first, but it doesn't seem like it stuck very well.

I never heard of it. Are you still seeing the therapist?

The only conversion therapy I've ever heard of is the kind that tries to convert gays into non-gays. I'm assuming this is not the same.
Google only comes up with two practitioners who discuss it on their sites. One of whom sounds creepy. Does it have another name? |

Yes, but she's moving away this Summer. I think she just got trained in it in November.

What does this kind of therapy involve?

Definitely not the same. I am unaware of any other name for it. I think Patrick Poor might be the guy who developed it for dissociative disorders.
Basically, you access the inner mind, tell It a memory, and allow it to vaccuum up pain associated with that memory. It worked well enough to be able to start talking about those .things, but didn't really purge much of the pain

here in my location treatment providers must wait for the alters to share the memories, emotions and pain and use ways of accepting what happened pain emotions and all (integrating \ a coming together or all that the trauma caused rather than enforcing more separation and coverting that trauma to other things\problems) example my treatment provider could not tell me to tell trixie about the time when.... give that pain to trixie to vacuum up/ take away the pain... here in my location dissociation has already separated the trauma and pain and the process is regaining those trauma, pain and emotions, learning how to handle what happened... Im wondering if this is why the process they had you try did not work.. instead of having to deal with it, they had you give that pain\convert it to being deeper buried and now after talking about the trauma its coming back to the surface... Just a guess here based on how your process would have been with in me.. only you and your treatment providers can say for sure why its not working for you. my suggestion is talk with your treatment providers, maybe they can help you with this. |

Well... Whatever works, I guess. Im a little leery of less conventional methods of psychotherapy and I don't think I'd go for this. Though there is something that appeals to me about the vacuuming imagery. Have you tried more standard approaches to trauma?

Never heard about it. Just googled it and like others only saw a couple of practitioners websites. Though I always welcome new approaches. I personally wouldn't trust anything that has such little information output. Also, I would want to see some research or some kind of empirical study behind it. That's not to say that the method is invalid. It may or may not be. Not enough is known about it for me personally to trust it. But that's just me and my take.

I just googled it too. an interesting and red flag for me in this therapy approach is the website states on it where explaining a general statement of what the therapy does (but not the actual therapy process) then you click on for therapists and it goes into detail about classes then it states that grievances must be in writing ( in other words this person isnt promising anything and is expecting treatment providers to complain /have problems with this...
really gives therapists and clients alike confidence in this person teaching the classes and the material being taught and is worth it and a good process. I would never try anything with a treatment provider where there is the expectation that this is actually a failure and sitting around waiting for the written grievances. |

That website wasn't there last time I googled it. My T uses the same phrases about dissociation that Patrick Poor does. I don't see the part about grievances that you mentioned though. Where was it?

All grievances should be in writing and will be responded to within 72 hours. it is sandwiched between availability to people with disabilities and when treatment providers will receive their certificates for attending the classes. and there is no location nor dates for when and where the classes are. in other words its a very disorganized page but its there. dont feel bad about missing it.... most people would not notice a one sentence disclaimer slapped in between other stuff. thats a common marketing strategy (I think of it like how commercials on tv give you lots of good words but most unless they know they are there dont see the extremely small print on the bottoms of the commercials disclaiming the products success and approval of those who over see that product.) Ive taken a marketing class in the past so I knew to notice it. |

I'm suspicious just because of the two practitioners I found that mentioned it, but a sentence about grievances being in writing sounds like boilerplate cya to me, not an expectation that this won't work.
