i am getting scared that my T wont accept what i am able to pay her when i see her privately . i figured out that i can afford $60 a week . i know at the clinic my insurance was charged $150 but paid only $57 and then my co pay of $20 so in total the clinic got paid $77 a week . im terrified that im going to show up and My T isnt going to agree to the amount and im not going to be able to see her any more . i told her i figured out how much i can afford and it was not as much as my insurance would pay .she said that sometimes it isnt what insurance pays that is important . but once again she wouldn't ask how much i can afford . what if everything is horrible . what if she wont let me come back to see her in the clinic . if you pay out of pocket how much do you pay . im just wondering .

i also am worried about seeing her privately . there was a sort of comfort in seeing her at the clinic . she had others to answer to . there were always other people around . rules she needed to follow . she is on her own privately . it has some good points to this like she doesn't have to keep notes and justify my T to an insurance company but this could turn out to be bad also .

I pay $70 after my subsidies. I hope you can discuss your concerns with your T.

I pay £40 which is the equivalent of $53. Therapy tends to be cheaper over here though, because people don't generally have insurance because of the free universal health care (though therapy on the NHS is very limited).

My T gave me a reduced rate of $60 when she no longer took my insurance. Last year I decided I could pay $75 but that was my decision, not hers.

It sounds like your T will accept whatever you give her since she hasn't specified an amount. Try not to worry. It will all work out.

Does your insurance offer out of network benefits? Mine pays at a lower rater for out of network than in network, but they still pay something (my T and marriage counselor are out of network). I assume the clinic you went to was in network. You would probably have to submit the paperwork yourself to the insurance company (receipts and claim forms), but then you might get some help from insurance. Something to check into.

If not, I agree with the others that your T would probably be willing to work with you, even if you can't pay as much. It's not like you're only offering, say, $5. I definitely understand your being worried about it.

It's a trade off for a T. Sometimes they are willing to accept a bit less than insurance would pay just to be free of the hassles involved in dealing with insurance. Discuss it with your T and try not to catastrophize about it until you've discussed it with her.

In private practice, your T is responsible to you and to herself and to her professional ethics and to the board(s) that license her to practice. Ask her about her rules and etc. up front, ask her what is different from before and what is the same. Probably not much will be different.

ETA: I pay $25 out of pocket plus about $57 from insurance.

I pay all out of pocket but it is about how I feel about insurance more than how I feel about the fees.

I pay $49 for every session, once a week. And then $76 a month for talkspace but I pay that quarterly.

I pay out of pocket $100. Do check into if your insurance pays something for out of network, you'll probably have to submit receipts, but it might be worth it.
Thanks for this!

My copay is $30. I see my T twice a week though, so I pay $60 out of pocket a week. It's not as bad as what some people have to pay, but for me right now it's kinda hard just paying that much.

I pay the full $150 per hour to my therapist, no cash discount, but I know that insurance cuts that amount down for those who have it, and am almost certain that she sees clients for little or maybe even nothing, as she has very low income clients. I'm sure my therapist has factored varying rates into her practice. If yours is like mine, she does not offer to do things that she regrets.

As for the move to private practice: I have the opposite reaction to seeing a therapist in a clinic setting. It feels very unsafe to me because the clinic is unquestionably their employer, not the client, and that's who they answer to. The times I've had to use that setting, I didn't feel like a person. In private practice, therapy feels more individualized and accountable to me.

I guess I didn't fully answer the question. My T is $130 and marriage counselor $175, then insurance reimburses 60% of that (we pay upfront, their office submits paperwork to insurance, then we get reimbursement checks from insurance). But my T's current rate is $150 (she keeps me at her old rate), and they bill the insurance for the $150. So I get more than 60% back for her.
So ultimately, I pay about $40 out of pocket for T and $70 to marriage counselor per week (she's a social worker, he's a PhD and owns the practice).

Where on earth did you find £40 therapists??? I saw one at that price at the beginning and she was hopeless. Very nice, but hopeless at her job.

I first started seeing ex t in a community clinic, and paid around $40 per session. Later she moved to a private setting, and her fees were $150, but she kept my fee the same. I also preferred to see her in private practice... in the community setting she was bound by certain rules (like length of therapy and age of clients) but in private practise she had much more freedom to make her own rules, while still being bound by ethical guidelines.

My current t I see in a community clinic. I get x amount of free sessions and will then have to pay $80 per session, no sliding scale.
