I have been seeing current T for 3-1/2, 4 years. As I am prone to serious transference, I knew it was inevitable. However, it was different this time. I went back and forth between erotic and maternal transference. I'd never had maternal transference, I didn't think, though now I wonder. Anyway, I lost my mom last June and since that time, it's been more and more maternal, with erotic still there, but not as often. Now, with Mom's death, that makes perfect sense, I think.
Here's the part that makes it weird, to me. She's almost 13-1/2 years younger than I am. How can I have maternal transference for someone not even in MY generation, let alone my mother's?

Condolences on the loss of your mother.

I don't think it's strange to experience what you are feeling. I think things like transference are much more about the roles people play than any of their demographic characteristics. My therapist reminds me very much of my mother even though he's a man in my age bracket.

Do you feel like talking to your therapist about it?
Thanks for this!

When I talked with my t about the age part I concluded that the part of me that sees her as mommy is significantly younger than the part in her that I see as mommy. I am about 6 yr older than my t. BTW, my t does not remind me of my mother. I think she is more the mother I wished I had in the sense of attunement, positive regard, and attention.
Thanks for this!

My therapist is only 10 years older than me and I have paternal transference. Transference knows no age!!

A therapist should be supportive, caring, nurturing and give some guidance. All of these aspects are, in a sense, maternal so I don't find this strange at all - especially given your recent loss.
Thanks for this!
