Actually a toupe would bother me because I would worry that all their confidence was a front, and that they were just as insecure as I am underneath the facade. It's important to me to have a therapist who's comfortable with themselves--not a slob or uncaring about appearance—but I think that highlighting who they are is different than hiding.

I get what you're saying and I think I'd feel the same.

Maybe what the OP is concerned about other than the deception is being afraid to put their trust in the therapist for fear they are not strong enough to handle the issues they are bringing to therapy? For example, say you were struggling with body image, going to see a T for help with this who also happens to wear a toupe would make me feel like the T has issues with their own body/image, so how is he going to handle this topic and help me? Is he resilient enough or is he going to get triggered? Will his "stuff" get in the way of helping me with mine?
Thanks for this!

I already believe that their professional demeanor is a front and that therapists are no less prone to insecurity, ego, etc than anyone else. It doesn't bother me particularly. I expect them to not act like it for the time I pay for, but I certainly don't expect them to actually no be it. Acting.
