New T didn't show up for in home appointment last week. It would have been my second session with him. I texted asking if he was on his way. Almost an hour after my appointment was scheduled he texted to say his car wouldn't start. I replied asking if he could book an appointment later that day and I could take a bus to his office. Never responded but many hours later texted his phone died too, charged now and when could we rebook. I replied and no response. Few days later I texted him asking to set up another appointment. He responded three days later and booked one

So today I took the bus to his office. His office is in a townhouse. Ten minutes into the appointment he dozed off in his chair. I coughed and he woke up. I said "Are you tired?"His response "I'm sorry I'm taking everything in." He asked me a question and was taking notes. I start talking again and look over, he's dozed off again. This time I talked a bit louder, it startled him. He repeated the same question he asked earlier. T then stood up to excuse himself and headed to the bathroom. I decided I'm not paying someone to fall asleep during sessions. His notebook was sitting on the table upside down. I picked it up. My name was at the top and all his notes were nothing but scribbles and scratches. Nothing was legible. He came out of the bathroom and asked where I was going. I said your falling asleep during my session. Im paying a lot of money for therapy with you and going through a crisis. Goodbye. I left.

Wow, how incredibly unprofessional and rude. There is clearly something wrong with this guy. I think you were absolutely right to walk out and what you said was perfect. Good luck finding a different T!

Thanks. I was so upset. He tried to convince me to stay and said "Thanks for waking me up. I took a gravol the night before and I guess it made me sleepy."

Wow! I have never had a T fall asleep, and I've been seeing someone for 13 years. Different Ts over that time, but still, none of them have ever fallen asleep!

I've had the occasional "I'm sick, can we reschedule?" call/text... one T was having some medical issues and needed to miss quite a bit. I was near wanting to ask the office to reassign me, but she was the only one that took my insurance, and I knew that, so I hesitated.

She ended up retiring, with very short notice, meaning she offered me one session after telling me to close out before switching to the new one...

I declined, since I never really clicked with her in the first place, and just started with the new one. She is so much better!

Finding a good T is kinda like finding a restuarant that makes your favorite dish exactly how you like it... you have to shop around, sometimes for a while, before you find the right one. (Sorry, may be a weird analogy, I haven't had nearly enough caffeine today...)

Hmm... How did you find this guy? (Sorry if you said this before. I'm not up to date.)

If you need a therapist still:

If you have a pdoc and assuming he didn't give you a recommendation for this guy, he may be able to assist you in finding a new therapist.

There is also: https://psychcentral.com/find-help/

Sorry you're going through this, but I'm glad you walked out.

WOW...you made the right decision to ditch this "therapist" for sure. He didn't deserve a dime.

Update. I feel so disappointed in myself because I gave this therapist another chance. He apologized for falling asleep because he was exhausted and not feeling well. He took a gravol the night before. He sent several emails hoping I would give him another chance.

Im a sucker because I gave him another chance. He promised he wouldn't fall asleep and would listen to me fully.

Late last week I saw him. Guess what!? He fell asleep again within 15 min of my hour long session. I was talking. He was sitting across from me but his chair was off to the right side. I looked over, his head was drooping, slight smile on his face. I stomped my foot on the floor. He woke up. I said" You promised you wouldn't fall asleep!" His response "Sorry I took a gravol last night."

I up and left. Never paid him. Either this psychologist has a medical issue or couldn't care a less. I felt so upset and disappointed. ☹️️ He's a registered licensed psychologist

I am so sorry this happened again. It was really sweet to give him another chance and you wanted to see the best in him. I am really glad that you confronted him and walked out without paying. So he took a pill, that's no excuse, if he knows it makes him drowsy why continue to take them.
Where does this leave you now? do you have another therapist you can go to or do you trust that another one will be better?
I just can't imagine how horrible that was for you Monarch. Maybe you might consider reporting him?
Thanks for this!

So he took the medicine (I had to Google, I know it as Dramamine) before the first appt, and fell asleep. You made it clear this was unacceptable. He begged for forgiveness and another chance. You relented and gave him that chance. Why would he take one the night before your appt? If it did it the first time, and he knew what happened with you in particular, why even risk it?

I get it, the med can be used for vertigo, motion sickness, and some other things... and it does make people drowsy... but I kinda wonder, taking it the night before and then sleeping for the night, he shouldn't (in my opinion, as someone who has taken this type of medicine) be falling asleep at work! There has to be something else going on, some other medical thing, or he is really sensitive to this medicine (and should stop taking it at all)...

It is absolutely insane, and unprofessional, for him to do that twice, with the same patient! Once, maybe I can understand, but the second you agreed to give him a second chance, he should have made a note in his calendar to NOT TAKE THAT STUPID PILL the night before YOUR APPT! I am absolutely dumbfounded at how he could even think that was appropriate, knowing what had happened the first appt...

I am so sorry, that it happened at all, let alone twice. Can you file a complaint thru whichever agency he is licenced thru. I don't know where you are, like country, so not sure how it would work... but if it happened twice with you, I don't even want to know how many other times it's happened, but the client didn't complain or walk out, because they may not be able to stand up for themselves. This is a therapist, which means people go there when they have confidence or abuse issues, and these people cannot speak up like others can... someone needs to report him, this can't keep happening.

Unbelievable. I probably would have given a second chance-meds can make a person sleepy. But twice? No way. Good for you for leaving and not paying. You deserve better.

Ugh, I'm sorry. I have to wonder if he really did take the medication both times or was just using that as an excuse? If he took something that made him sleepy, he needs to do something to counteract it, like drink coffee, or else cancel his appointments. You did the right thing. Hope you can find another more alert T...
Thanks for this!

I wonder too if the meds were an excuse. Maybe there is more to it. He should find a way of dealing with the issue so he doesn't fall asleep. Agree it's unprofessional.

I found some reviews and one of them said he's nodded off during sessions. I could contact, file a complaint to the psychology board. I'm just worried if I complain will it be known to other psychologists, mark against me?

I don't have another therapist. I've had two therapist fails. One turned sort of creepy, second one falls asleep. Eventually I need to find someone new. I endured a traumatic incident 7-8 months ago that is affecting me.
