My therapist brought this up last session In context of relationship Styles. At first I went along because what she read aloud seemed applicable but after doing since reading about it and my "number" I didn't liked it as much. In fact I kinda hate the number I was read as (nine).

I want to be open minded but honestly, this feels like zodiac for psychologists. any other other number, I'd bet I bet I'd find something relate top as well.

What do you think of this stuff?

I think Jung did a bit of this ? I find it interesting and mentioned it to my T but he didn't know about it. I did a test online and came up as 9 too , but it wasn't clear what the " wing " was.

I'm enneagram three which makes me sound like an overachieving a hole. A three reading sounds like tracy flick character (Reese Witherspoon) in the movie election.

I've never had a t use this but I've heard it is a very old system that may not be backed u by research. The reference to astrology may not be far off base. But jungians do love metaphors and stories. And archetypes.

Never seen this before. Took both tests and seem to have almost even higher scores for four different personality types. Hmm. In reading the four, I definitely see parts of me in all of those four while aspects of all four that are not me at all (generally countered in one of the other three).

I did the test as part of a leadership academy and I found it pretty useless. Like you said, I can relate to parts of each description. I think there are better ways of learning about yourself such as the DISC or the Meyers-Briggs.

My t is interested in stuff like this especially from the Jungian perspective (as she does Jungian depth therapy). I'm a 4. I think it's interesting too.

I guess I was a little set off because a nine's weaknesses is considered "sloth" I've had two Exes call me "lazy" for different reasons, both were unfair and cruel. Then reading the personality traits didn't seem very positive. At best I'm a good listener, who gives up my own space and time without conditions. That's not much of a compliment!. I don't like what I've read so far, or understand of it .

My T said she was a 2 which fits any therapist it seems. But it also seems like the test is much more flattering of 2s ability to act, go figure. But What really freaked me out, however was that my Ex fit the "unhealthy" 2 to a tee. (Manipulative, using empathy to lure people in and expecting validation in return) I hate to think my T had anything in common with my ex!

I got 5 with equal wings (or something like that about the wing). I got INTP for the Briggs thing.
Both therapists I pay consider those to be hokum.

I used to like these kinds of tests when I was much younger, tried many versions, and found them interesting and useful back then. Enneagram pegged me 5 with 4 wing and Myers-Briggs INTP or INTJ. I actually used these tests to work on features that were apparently my weaknesses. I no longer care about these tests and find them far too simplistic and superficial. Also, I have seen many people who take the tests and then get obsessed with the result and develop a strong projective identification... basically a distorted view of themselves, they want to believe everything should apply and over-identify with the result. If human psychology and behavior were that simple and easy to classify...

I mentioned briefly these tests in an email once to my current T but the topic never came up in session. I doubt that he uses anything like these with clients for therapy.

We talked about the enneagram stuff in session today.

I told her that I'm resistant to a lot of it from what I've read online and tried to argue that I could be aa 6, when she had me pegged as a 9, but when we got down to the nitty gritty of it, what she had printed out for 9 did fit better over all. I was flattered that she printed out a chapter for me and she seemed excited to talk about it that I just went with it and tried to really think about the idea. It's one of those moments where I could tell she was thinking about it between sessions, which felt good.

The other fear I have is being seen as a 'number' and not a person. Having behavior or issues categorized as 'inherent' or interpreted through this model feels restrictive to me. But I'm like that about a lot of things, ... label wise.. (Ironically, not my sexuality however.)

I can accept this practice as an avenue to accepting myself and not judging myself and also looking at potential strengths and feeling good about those aspects of my personality. I can get with that. I can use the listed 'strengths' as jumping off point, I guess. The problem I have is I don't see how my listed "strengths" are going to help me change my weakness or those areas in my life I want to change.

It's something to think about though. I found a better resource online since then and will do some homework on this for next session.

Enneagram tests suck - you're better off reading firsthand sources.

I'm a 9w1. It sucks.

Same here...a 9, with "wing" of 5w6 or 6w5. It said that it was hard to read my answer? I've never heard of this. I agree with a lot of the 9 description, though.

I think you can get some useful language out of these things, but you have to take the parts that are useful and leave the rest behind, including anything that makes you feel rotten or feels restrictive. The enneagram and Myers-Briggs aren't scientific, so I see no reason to let them make you feel bad. But I do find Myers-Briggs language really useful, personally. Watch a strong J and a strong P try to make plans together, and Myers-Briggs explains a lot!

As far as I know, the only scientifically validated test, the one used in academic research into personality, is the Big Five, and far fewer people seem to have heard of that one. Its dimensions are Conscientiousness, Agreeability, Neuroticism, Openness to Experience, and Extroversion, with a bunch of sub-dimensions too. You just get a score for each dimension, so it doesn't put you in a handy category, which might be why it hasn't gotten popular. It's a lot harder to remember 5 numeric scores in your head than "INFJ" (my own type).

Are there any Star Trek fans in the house ?!! In all the Star Trek series there are nine major characters that are based on the enneagram. For the number nines among us , in The Next Generation Counselor Deanna Trio represents the number 9 ( with a wing ). So doing her job she puts her feelings aside for other people , but she has to look after herself too and have support from other people - she often does get in a bit of a mess , gets miserable and eats chocolate. I do this in my relationships sometimes.
