Question: does your therapist have a bed in his or her office? Like the psychoanalytic kind? The other day I saw him and was surprised, hocked and scared to find that there..what was your reaction?.

No, my T doesn't have a bed.
What is a psychoanalytic kind of bed? Do you mean a couch?

Yes, my T has a psychoanalytic couch. I knew she had one before I met her as there are photos of the room on her website. I tried lying on it once as I was curious about it. Even though I didnt really like it much, it wasn't as scary as I thought!

I had to lie down once during a hypnosis session (love seat couch, I was almost too long for it). I felt vulnerable but I adjusted

Yeah, my T has a psychoanalytic couch because he is a psychoanalyst. I believe many of his patients lie there. I used to lie there two for 3 years but now temporarily I don't because lying down caused some problems in my treatment.

Never had a T with a couch in her office. However I've done some therapy on medical examination/treatment tables (even once on a gyneachologist's table with stirrups - not that I used the stirrups..) when my leg had just been amputated and I was unable to sit upright for longer than about an hour (and that hour I had already spent by being driven to the T).

No, my T does not have a psychoanalytic bed in her office. She just has a couch and chairs.

That would totally freak me out!

I can't even imagine laying down and talking with my counselor. It feels to - vulnerable maybe? Does your therapist have a bed in his or her office?

Ugh. A previous Pdoc had an exam-like table in one of the rooms in his office. Not psychoanalytic, just psycho.

Not the psychoanalytic kind, no. But she does have a regular couch that I sit on, and she sits in a chair. Except for when we sit on the floor sometimes. She's asked before if I want to lay down (when I look tired after a long day of work) but I never do. It's one thing laying on the floor when we do energy work (haven't done that in a long time though) but I don't want to lay on the couch - she's one person that I want to look in the eye when we are talking - there aren't many people I am comfortable doing that with because of my lazy eye or whatever you call it. She doesn't let it freak her out. My h mentions it a lot when it 'floats' while I'm looking at him and I hate that he can't just get over it. I can't help it, when I'm tired, it does that. Well I certainly wandered off topic.

Hello,
Do you mean like the one psychiatrists sofa you see on t.v. like on Mad Men the season were Betty Draper went to see a shrink? I don't know if you've ever watched the show or not but that's what I picture in my head.
My T has a sofa a nice one that I always sit in.

I feel the same as you. If I was expected to lie on a couch, I wouldn't go!

No. She has a horrible couch - but it is not an analyst's couch - just an extremely uncomfortable one

yes my therapist and psychiatrist both have the stereotypical / old fashioned therapy couch but it isnt because they are in the mental health business. here in america we have this fashion "thing" where styles come and go and come back around again. it happens with everything .... movies (it seems you cant find a movie or tv show that hasnt come back in style / is a remake of a past one with the same name) clothing styles if you look at the way someone is dressed now days you can pretty much figure out that short dress or skirt was from the 60's those high heels are from the 70's heck even go go boots have back in style with another name. wont be long before the "pants on the ground" style comes back or that bee hive hair do, a man bun is new? um no look at the movie Mulan from the 1990's and mens hair do's over the ages and you discover the man bun style has been here more than once....

my point everything including furniture has its style and in fashion time. right now the furniture styles include that of the "chaise lounge sofa" which is today's name for what has in the past been known as the analytical couch. if you look around in restraunts, hotels motels and other public places that have a seating/ waiting area you may also find many different colored chaise lounge sofas. Here in NY I have many friends that have a chaise lounge sofa in the "woodroom" or as some call it the entry hall. this is so that when company comes in from the snow and rain they have a place to sit down and remove their wet shoes/ boots, jackets before actually entering the rest of the house preventing tracking of snow ice and rain through the house.

do I have one where I work yes as does the hotel down the street (5 in the lobby alone have no idea how many through out the whole hotel) and like already stated my treatment providers have chaise lounges too.

I'm sure the psychoanalytic couch is more comfortable for afternoon naps (or client cancellations)
Thanks for this!

For some reason this issue came up with my pdoc yesterday. He said he once had to use an office with such a bed/couch and it really annoyed him, because some would lie down on it and he found it impossible to have a conversation with someone lying down.
