Do you ever "research" other therapists and wonder what it would be like to go to them or "check on" your therapist (I use to mostly with books) to see if they're doing things "right"/well?

I love reading therapist's sites. My most recent find "near" me (I do therapy for 9 years then take 9 years off. My next time I'm due is 2014 when I'll only be 64 so I'm shopping now :-)

I did this a lot before my first visit and then between the first couple of visits. I wanted to know exactly what would be expected of me and how the session might progress. There was no way in heck I was going to ask others about their experiences. I picked my therapist out to the phone book so I really had no idea if she typically treated people like me or not. It also took me a long time to figure out if therapy is what I needed or wanted. Unfortunately I've found no great success in preparing for a session. I just do not like surprises.

I was also very interested in what type of therapy I was receiving CBT, psychoanalysis, etc. And trying to figure out if she was good or not. Our first few sessions did not go well. At this point I think she practices a hybrid approach.

Now I need to stop thinking and worrying about what she is doing and thinking and just focus on what I am supposed to be doing.

I hadn't a clue as to what orientations even were until now. I kind of like schema therapy and I *think* T does some of this anyway with me.

I was reading about it in Oprah's magazine which is how I found it. I don't check up on his treatment interventions because that would take me way too long to try and dissect.

Of course, reading into his words I've done many times over as this is one of my chief issues.

I never really knew about different types of therapy until I started reading here. I do not check up on T. I feel that our relationship is true and beneficial and from the heart, so it doesn't matter what type of therapy he subscribes to. I know he is licensed, I knew him before I went and he was recommended by someone I trust. T is a professional and has excellent boundaries. I'm not so into labels. I know i would not be well matched with someone who practiced CBT because I need to reach my emotions on a deeper level and connect. It's just a personal preference.

The only exception is that I am very close to a family member who is a T herself. I mention things from my therapy from time to time. I know if there were any gross misconduct or if she felt I was not being treated properly she would guide me.

Perna, I have browsed a couple of online advertising sites that list therapists and descriptions of the therapy they offer. And as I read them, I may think "sounds interesting" or "I don't think I'd like that." But that's the extent of it.

I don't really "check up" on my therapist to see if he is following protocol or anything. I do sometimes read articles on psychotherapy but not with the aim of checking up on him, just to increase my knowledge. My T can be kind of unconventional sometimes ("I am a healer") and is classified as "eclectic," I believe, so there isn't one school he would follow. Before I began therapy with him, I didn't know any of the different types of therapy. I had a previous counselor who in retrospect, after coming here to PC, I learned was CBT. This method was not very effective for me and I am glad my current therapist is able to go deeper.

I think one of the most important things for me in therapy is my connection with my T. If I was searching for another therapist, I would search for one with whom I could really connect.
